JavaScript - External Third Party Js File Loading, Causing Site To Hang!!
So,
I have to rely on a third party external JS file to load into a site of mine. Problem is I have to have it (for ads), but once every blue moon the server fails to repond to the request (its down or unresponsive), and thus because the JS can't load, the site hangs. Is there a reliable js/ajax etc.. mechanism that I can use to set an allotted time and if the js isn't loaded, cancel the call or stop it so the page can load? Please advise. Caveats: I cannot host it, I cannot use php. Basically I was given a script call and I include it in the header of the page. I don't have alot of room to host, use various technologies etc.. other than what I am able to use without any backend/app scripting. Similar TutorialsHi, I have a JS file on site A which needs a few parameters from a short text file on site B. Since crossing domain boundaries in JS is problematic, the way I do it is that the JS actually opens an intermediate PHP file on site A which redirects to the destination page in site B. Here's how it goes: The call is made through: Code: On SiteA.com/myfile.js var theFile = getFile("intermediate.php"); var lines = theFile.split("\n"); var var1 = lines[1]; var var2 = lines[2]; var var3 = lines[3]; On SiteA.com/intermediate.php: <?php include("http://www.mySiteB.com/theTextFile.txt"); ?> The problem is that this takes a long time. I would really like to speed this up. For example - I thought of using a direct IP address, so that there won't be any need a DNS server (using Code: include("http://123.45.67.89/~myUsername/mySiteB/theTextFile.txt"); ) but this would expose me to hackers as it would make my Hostgator username visible. According to HG support the above format is the only way to access my subsite via direct IP. Any ideas on how to speed this up, either by bypassing DNS (but without exposing username) or by offering another way of reading data across sites? Suggestions for both JS and PHP files would be appreciated. I cannot set up a CDN here. This is really important for me! THANK YOU!!! HI,what is wrong here? I am trying to write code to print a message 5 seconds after document has loaded. Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> <html> <head> <script> var i; function printMsg(){ document.write("delayed string"); //tried adding to this line: clearTimeout(i); } function timedfunc(){ i=setTimeout(printMsg,5000); } </script> </head> <body onload="timedfunc()"> </body> </html> The message appears ok but the page loading bar in the browser + hourglass wont go away (in firefox). Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to load external pages (from a different server) into a lightbox, without using a iframe. Any solutions for this? Thanks a lot in advance! Kind regards, Robbert I have an external Javascript file that only works when I put: Code: <script type="text/javascript" src="external.js"></script> at the end of the HTML page. Does anyone know why it won't work in the head of the page? Thanks Greetings, I am looking for either a JavaScript or Coldfusion solution to the following problem. First, there are over 60 million product photos so downloading and resizing the photos using Coldfusion would be very tedious. I would like the display an image within a 100 x 100 pixel container. If the height or width of the image is great than 100 pixels, the image should reduce in size to fit within the 100 x 100 pixel container. I want to avoid pixelation of the images as much as possible. All images are external and not on the local server so I only have an image URL. I would like to hide all images until they are resized appropriately. Does anybody know of a piece of javascript code that can do something similar to this? Sincerely, Travis Walters Say I have a website, that I want to use an iframe with. Would be possible, to use Javascript to change the logo image of an iframe of myspace (just for the example), to one on my site? So switch the logo of myspace with one on my server? Is this possible? Blockis Hello. My goal is to load the JS for a specific element before displaying that element. I integrated a third part script, and it works well. I set the timer he The JS is in my heading as <script type="text/javascript" src="countdownpro.js"></script> About mid-body I have: <span id="countdown1">2010-07-20 00:00:00 GMT+00:00</span> which allows for the setting of a target date to countdown to. When the page first loads it shows the above long format target time, until the js/meta tags kick in to modify it to just show the actual countdown as 00:00:00. I have attached countdownpro.js to this post. I tried shifting the function CD_Init() to the top of the script, and also appended it inline with the .html. I tried setting the big external script to "defer", but neither arrangement worked. I also tried placing the src file right at the top. I appreciate your help. I'm kind of new to javascript so forgive me for my ignorance. Is their anyway to track right mouse click within an iframe that is linked to an external site (i.e. www.nbc.com)? I'm trying to see if I can have a alert window say "This is an image" when i right click on an image within the iframe. Hey guys. Is there any any ANY way to read highlighted text of in an iframe that is displaying an external server / site? Say you select some text in the iframe and click a button outside of the iframe that prints the selected text to a textbox? Really really would love to do this or any ANY workaround. This really sucks that its a security measure by default that doesn't allow this!! Ugh! Problem resolved. Please delete.
Hello, First time on the forum and I am admittedly a complete noob, so forgive me for any grievous misconceptions. I am a teacher trying to create a bulletin board on my website where students, teachers, and parents can post messages. I am trying to use the site linoit.com I am trying to embed that site on my website using an iframe url: http://www.capretto.net/stickyboard.shtml My problem is that when you go to the message board on my site it asks your for a username and password to login to access my message board from linoit. I was hoping there is a scripts or other trick that will auto fill the username and password when the page loads so that the message board opens automatically. Not too worried about privacy, but I could distribute the username and password to all interested parents, teachers, etc. but in my experience one more step between students and the information they need can be the difference between them not receiving the info. I'd be happy to give any contributors credit on my site for their coding help. Thanks in advance. Hi, I'm new to JavaScript and I'm having a bit of trouble understanding something that seems relatively simple. When I make changes to CSS in JavaScript using '.style' I'm changing the attribute values of inline CSS. Can I use JavaScript to change the attribute values of rules in an external CSS file? I have no CSS in my html and would like to know if I can grab the values of attributes in an external CSS file using JavaScript. Thank you. Hey all, I'm fairly new to JavaScript. I learned PHP and now I'm creating a user registration and login system for an application I'm making and I decided I wanted to give JS a try. I'm trying to make a form validation function that will be called when I press the submit button on the form but I want to use an external js file to store all my custom functions. I have the OnClick event in the button with the call to my function inside of that. But where and how on the page to I reference my external file so that the button can call the function? Thanks guys! Hey guys, I currently have a flash header .swf file as the header in my webpage. Problem is, it's 300 KB so it loads after everything else has already loaded, leaving a huge blank space where the .swf is suppossed to be until it finishes downloading. Is there a way I can tell my page to pre-load the .swf before everything else so that all elements in my page look like they load at the same? For example, with images I can do something like this: function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0 var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array(); var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++) if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}} } then: <body onload="MM_preloadImages('images/search.jpg','images/contact.jpg','images/home.jpg')"> Is there something like this for .swf? Is there a way to tell Javascript to load data or a php file the re-direct to that page? Right now i have a script that will re-direct when a user comes to the page. It waits about 5 seconds to give it time. I wanted to know if there was a way to load it with JS or AJAX. Thanks for any help. Hi, I need some help with a bit of a challenge. I need to allow users to spesify a file stored on their hard drive, read the file and populate a table and eventually a database. I can probably upload the file using <input type='file'> but what then? How do I access the file after this, or is there a better way? Using XMLHTTP gives 'access denied.....' I can not use PHP as the site does not support PHP. For those who know the environment - it's a QuickBase application I need to upload to....... Thanks Nic relatively new coder here definitely new to js and I can't figure out how to get this script linked into an external file every time I try nothing shows up. Code: <html> <head> <script language="JavaScript1.1"> <!-- var slideimages=new Array() var slidelinks=new Array() function slideshowimages(){ for (i=0;i<slideshowimages.arguments.length;i++){ slideimages[i]=new Image() slideimages[i].src=slideshowimages.arguments[i] } } function slideshowlinks(){ for (i=0;i<slideshowlinks.arguments.length;i++) slidelinks[i]=slideshowlinks.arguments[i] } function gotoshow(){ if (!window.winslide||winslide.closed) winslide=window.open(slidelinks[whichlink]) else winslide.location=slidelinks[whichlink] winslide.focus() } //--> </script> <title></title> </head> <body> <a href="javascript:gotoshow()"><img src="img1.jpg" name="slide" border=0 width=250 height=250></a> <script> <!-- //configure the paths of the images, plus corresponding target links slideshowimages("img1.jpg","img2.jpg","img3.jpg","img4.jpg","img5.jpg") slideshowlinks("#","#","#","#","#") //configure the speed of the slideshow, in miliseconds var slideshowspeed=3000 var whichlink=0 var whichimage=0 function slideit(){ if (!document.images) return document.images.slide.src=slideimages[whichimage].src whichlink=whichimage if (whichimage<slideimages.length-1) whichimage++ else whichimage=0 setTimeout("slideit()",slideshowspeed) } slideit() //--> </script> </body> </html> obviously get rid of html tags and <script></script> tags save it as file.js and then <script type="text/javascript" src="file.js"> </script> do i need to break this up into 2 files or something I can't get it to work Hi guys. I've made a html file with three lists to populate different pages of my site. Then i've called the html with SSI. let me show the code the HTML with the list's Code: <div id="list_box"> <ul class="list"> <li><a href="#">item01</a></li> <li><a href="#">item02</a></li> <li><a href="#">item03</a></li> <li><a href="#">item04</a></li> <li><a href="#">item05</a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="list_box"> <ul class="list"> <li><a href="#">item06</a></li> <li><a href="#">item07</a></li> <li><a href="#">item08</a></li> <li><a href="#">item09</a></li> <li><a href="#">item10</a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="list_box"> <ul class="list"> <li><a href="#">item11</a></li> <li><a href="#">item12</a></li> <li><a href="#">item13</a></li> <li><a href="#">item14</a></li> <li><a href="#">item15</a></li> </ul> </div> the HTML with the list loaded Code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> <title>Untitled Document</title> <style type="text/css"> <!-- #list_box { height:100%; width: 100%; padding-top: 15px; padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px; padding-bottom: 20px; background-color: #cccccc; overflow: hidden; } ul.list li { list-style-type: none; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; } .list a:link, .list a:visited { font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px; color: #036; text-decoration: none; text-align: left; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; } .list a:hover{ font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px; color: #ffffff; text-decoration: none; text-align: left; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; } --> </style> </head> <body> <div id="list_box"> <!--#include file="list.html" --> </div> </body> </html> the zip with the sample I've made load_external.zip I wanted to ask how can I make an item from the list's to have a different css in the html with the loaded list's. because in each page one of the items (that are all buttons) will be up or should I say active. can someone tell me how can I do this please. Maybe with javascript? thanks in advance I have an issue with my javascript files loading (i.e. checking the source code of the page after having loaded yields working links to my external files and the JQuery loading for sure after running some test), but calling a function from my javascript file works in no way shape or form. For example, one test I was running was: From my .js file Code: $("p").click( function() { $(this).hide(); } ) This will work on a standalone page when I test it (not loading from external .js file), but not in the page I need to get my scripts running on. |
