PHP - Null Vs Empty Field In Mysql?
I see some of the fields in mysql show NULL and some are just empty, wonder what is the difference, is empty field still NULL?
Similar TutorialsCan anyone tell me the best way to handle empty search field on a mysql Query? I would like to know what is the difference between those two. I know they share similarities. But from what I know a 0 integer or a 0 string is considered empty. How do I know when to use NULL and When to use empty ? I am trying to structure some php to detect if a value is null, if it is not null i want it to print the value if null print nothing.
so far all i have it doing is detecting whether it is null or not. but it is printing part of my code instead of the fields value.

this is for a word press theme that I am modifying for my purpose. I have one field which is set up as a Text field in my database. What I'm wanting is if the field is blank in the form to just leave the field alone in the database. I need it to be NULL. OR...is there a way to query a database to recognize a field is blank? What i want to do is before it runs this script and starts including/invoking the class etc, i want to be able to check to see if there is a value been posted from a FILE FORM OBJECT and if there is to proceed with this script, alternatively i want it to execute another code which will handle it in regards to the concept of my page. (resume) based on the email address they enter in the active page output. I then run an upload page to store the resume in teh MySQL db based on the users email address in the same record. If I isolate the process of the user registering to the db, it works perfectly. If I isolate the file upload process into the db, it works perfect. I simply cannot upload teh file to the existing record based on teh email form field matching the user_email field in the db. With the processes together, teh user is activated, but teh file is not uploaded. Maybe I've simply been at this too long today, but am compeled to get through it by end day. If anyone can help sugest a better way or help me fix this, I will soo greatly appreciate it. I know the following simple demonstration fails and what to do to rectify it (though with a lot of additional code is necessary), but I don't know why this is the behaviour. Logically, one would think that nothing or NULL gets inserted to that field since the MySQL structure rule states that default is NULL, and since nothing is fed to it in the query, I think that it would automatically be NULL since if the column is omitted, that is exactly the value that will be inserted. Enclosing the variable with quotes is not preferable since this field accepts integers. Also, converting the variable to an integer by (int)$number results in a 0, which is not what I want either. Checking if the variable is empty of not, and if it is, assign $number = "''" so that the query would succeed by enclosing the empty string with single quotes. But this creates a lot of unnecessary code (some of my tables are 80 columns wide and the query therefore have equal amount of variables). So to summarise, why is this happening and how do I neatly avoid assigning quotes to the empty strings? In other words, how do I insert nothing when variables that usually contain an integer is on occation empty? I am trying to update the database with isset to set the value of the variable to either null or the value entered by the user. Currently, if no value has been entered null is being set as a string causing the date field to populate with zeros. How do I code it so that it populates or sets the value as null and not as string null?
