PHP - Foreach Loop To Parse All Records Of Simplexml Element Object

Hi there, hope have some help. I have a form where a user select time and days of the week (monday, tuesday..) that he is available. The insert script works fine, it insert and the days of week he checked in the table, the only problme is when i try to update each of them. I used this code above, but is not working, instead of updating/inserting days that is selected is inserting multi-records with the same day of the week value. here it is:

foreach($weekDay as $DaysofWeek){

$sql_days = "UPDATE available SET day_time = '$day_time', week_day = '$DaysofWeek' WHERE user_id = '$id_user'";

$update_availability = mysql_query($sql_days);

I'm having a problem trying to understand how to grab the following values,

<times>
<time type="join">1293756060</time>
<time type="leave">1293756420</time>
</times>

Ive read and tried everything I can find for a couple days now and cant get anything to grab both separate times
   foreach ($xml->times->time as $times){
   $timein{$num} = $times; //this grabs leave time, by accident im sure lol
   $timeout{$num} = ???????; //dont know how to separate them by join/leave.
}

I have two problems with reading a XML file with SimpleXML and the foreach loop:

Problem number one: If I have an item with only one "segment" child, I get the error "Fatal error: Call to a member function attributes() on a non-object in /var/www/readxml.php on line 28". My way of using a $segnum variable which I increment is maybe not necessary since it is a foreach loop... But what would be the right way?

Problem number two: My code only sums up the size of the first two segments, but it should sum up all. What's the problem here?

I am thankful that hakre offered a great example in the comments that makes a overwhelming starting point for my project. Below I have added my own answer to the question, how to refine the code to ad more tags.

I want to filter the data to get the nodes with special category. Here is sample of the OSM data I want to get the whole schools within an area. The first script runs well - but now I want to refine the search and add more tags. I want to store all into MySQL.
