PHP - Oop Class Static Call

I have the following simple class:

  public static $mysql_datetime_format = "%c/%e/%Y %l:%i %p " . date("[T]");
}

And referencing like:

echo Settings::$mysql_datetime_format;

But, I am getting the error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '.', expecting ',' or ';'.

Why is this invalid?

Was just wondering why some people choose NOT to make use of static functions when initializing objects via Factory Classes/Containers.

What are the benefits of initializing the Factory class when for all intensive purposes, it's only used to initialize new classes, etc? 
Does this have any impact on Dependency Injection?  I'm assuming that it doesn't since that would defeat the purpose.

Also, I've noticed that there seems to be an intense stigma within the development community in regard to singletons. 
Are singletons necessarily a bad thing? 

What about database objects? 

One argument I've heard is that this can often impact the flexibility of your application in the event that a new instance of said class needs to be initialized(a second completely separate connection).

However, I was thinking that you could simply store these objects within a static member variable in the factory class; leaving the Database Class' __construct public in the event that you need to create that second/third/fourth connection.

Wouldn't this resolve the issue? 

Hi guys, I am trying something fairly simple but I'm not sure if this would be a good practice. Basically I am using a big class called CommonLibrary that holds common functions as methods and common variables as static variables. But I have some variables here and there like $allAlphabet = range ('a' , 'z'), that cannot be declared as a property because it gives me a parse error.

I don't want to call an object for this class because instancing it is of no use. Values will never change with regards to instances. So the next best thing that I tried was declaring all static variables first, and then changing thei property values inside the class __construct with self::$variable = 'somevalue', and then using this code below to assign values to the empty static variables.

Anyone recommend any better ways of doing this?

I am currently building my own MVC Framework and I have run into an issue that I can't solve when attempting to use 2 methods from a single model. I know that this isn't an issue with the queries or information being return. I am unsure of the proper way that I can call 2 methods when checking to see if a user is logged in... The issue that I face is both methods are calling the DB and it throws a PDO error which I don't know how to get around the issue.. Any guidance would be nice as I have been banging my head over this issue. Thank you!

Wrong Code

This is a bit of a more advanced question so I am hoping there are some advanced programmers online at this time . Anyways basically I want to be able to "queue" functions from a class in a single call and am wondering if I am doing it correctly or if there is a better way to do it. Here is my code:

Is there a better way to do this or is there a different method of doing this? Just wanna make sure I am doing it right lol.

I thought I was a beginner PHPer but now I'm not even sure I'm that. I have this class here which starts with:

Do you suppose that the original developer just had a singleton or something, then latter on he found that he was making more instances and PHP tolerates this behavior? Or am I missing something?

Im working with php 5.1.6. With xampp 1.5.14. Im also working on a stock application. If I want to say add stock product (add_stock.php) this error is generated on screen. It seems to refer to a function in ump.class.php   Here we go, ump.class.php

now who can tell me what is wrong with the function filter_var() method on line 186 in ump.class.php?  

Hi I have a table class and functions I want to call in another function but can't get it working. Some help will be very welcome.

It seesm that the new table class is not working in this function if I pass the values to it, I have tested the class, it does get the post values I post to it so $_POST['id'] are being received as well as all the other $_POST's but the table class and find function is not working, it works fine if I don't put it in a function..

The code is about making call to the escreen web service using SOAP and Curl with client authentication required. Currently I am not getting any result only HTTP 403 and 500 errors.

QUESTIONS:

1. I need to call the RequestTicket method and pass the XML string to it.
   I don't know how to do it here(pass the method name to call).

2. For client authentication they gave us three certs, one root cert, one intermediate
   cert and a client authentication cert PROTPLUSSOL_SSOpem(it was a .pfx file). Since we are on linux we converted them to pem . In curl calls I could not find way to how to include both the root cert and the intermediate cert ,so I combined them by making a new pem file and copying the intermediate cert and them the root cert and naming it authority.pem .
I am not sure whether it works or not and would like your opinion.

3. For the current code Iam getting the error
   Error no : 77 Curl error: error setting certificate verify locations: CAfile: /home/pps/authority.pem CApath: /home/pps/

 
  If I disable the curl error message,I am getting blank page with page title 403 - Forbidden. Access is denied.

  If I comment out the CURLOPT_CAPATH and CURLOPT_CAINFO lines it gives http 500 error page with the message as content and the following at the top.
