PHP - Loop Is Adding Too Many News Feed Updates

How does facebook do their news feed? Or can you think of an algorithm that will do this effectively?

I thought of an algorithm, but it's not that effective.

My algorithm goes like this, choose 10 random friends from their friends list, and then put the latest updates of these friends into an array in order, then output the updates onto the feed in order.

The problems with this algorithm are that this makes the feed change every time because there are new random friends shown. Then there's the problem of choosing friends that are inactive, therefore showing updates from a long time ago.

Any suggestions?

I'm fairly new to PHP but i know the basics. I've been working with the Steam XML feeds for various reasons and i'm trying to create a list of friends that show whether they are online/offline, show their profile pic... etc...

To get a persons friends list (using me as an example) is: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197970734089/friends?xml=1
But to get to get more information from the friends you take the steamID from the above XML and take information from their main profile XML feed, i have to do this because the normal profile XML (again as me as an example): http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197970734089?xml=1 , only displays 6 friends details at a time.

I hope you under stand but please see my PHP below, the problem i'm having is that it takes forever to run the loop and certain mobile browsers just wont display the page (timeout). I didn't know whether you guys being the phpfreaks would know of a faster memory efficient way of doing this?

hello, i have created a table that desplays perticulars, price per person and number of people. the fees is then calculated by multiplying price per person with number of people. till now everything is good. but the problem is when i try to calculate the total fees.
here is an example to explain you better:

From the above code you can see that i am getting the amount form $amount = $perticulars['ppc'] * $perticulars['nop'];
by this each row has its own amount which i got by multiplying the data from mysql.
the problem is how do i find out the Total. i know i am suppose to add up $amount but how?
i even tired using sessions to store the amount and add the new amount to get total but the problem in using sessions is it messes up my next page, no using session is a very bad idea.

I have a database that contains a column with a int value for number of slots reserved, and what I want to do is fetch the value of each column and add them together to create one whole number. For example, in my database under preserved I have two separate values of 2 and 4.. I would like to take those two values and add them up into 6 through php... here is what I have so far:

I am trying to input data into a mysql database from data thats been added by a jquery form with cloned fields. It is working however it adds the first row correctly then a blank row and then the rest of the rows correctly

I have a database with some rows. in each row there is a number such as: 0.0023 or 0.0135...

Hope someone can help, I am trying to add up all the values of a variable in a PHP while loop and have tried several approaches but none seem to work. Hopefully someone can point out what the correct method is.

I've set up some code to pull the pay rate from a MySQL table, and then calculate that person's earnings based on the amount of time they spend on a particular job. That works fine:

           while ($row = $getrate->fetch_assoc()) {

              $staffrate = $row["Rate"];

              $earnings = ($staffrate/3600) * $jobeventtimeseconds;

              $earningsformatted = number_format($earnings, 2);

           }

However there may be a number of jobs for different people with different rates, so I want to add all of these up and output the total. So for example if I had values of 125.00, 35.50 and 22.75 I want to show 183.25 as the total.

So I tried a few things I found on forums on the subject:

$totalearnings = 0;

foreach($earningsformatted as $key => $value) {

   $totalearnings += $value;

}

echo $totalearnings;

That didn't work so I tried another method that someone suggested:

$total=array($earningsformatted);

echo array_sum($total);

The 2nd method outputted just the last individual value, the 1st method didn't work at all. Does anyone have a working method that can be used to do this?

Hi I have currently written some code which uses of the Twitter API and extracts the information required to display my most current tweet on my website. This is all working perfectly but at the minute it is only displaying one tweet and I would like it to display as many as the variable $limit is set to.

I have tried numerous count with while loops but just cannot seem to get my head around the logic of it.

Here is my dilemma and thank you in advance!

I am trying to create a variable variable or something of the sort for a dynamic associative array and having a hell of a time figuring out how to do this. I am creating a file explorer so I am using the directories as the keys in the array.

Example:
I need to get this so I can assign it values

$dir_list['root']['folder1']['folder2'] = value;

so I was thinking of doing something along these lines...
