PHP - Storing Values In Session Variable And Doing Simple Calculations.
Hi there,
I am working on a PHP web form and I have a very simple situation I guess, I have a variable named: $MyVal When I do print_r($MyVal); To see whats inside, I get: SimpleXMLElement Object ( [0] => 8.23 ) Now I am assigning this variable into a session variable so that I can do calculations with it. So I assign: $_SESSION['MySesVal'] = $MyVal; But after assigning to session variable, when I do my calculations: $finalValue = $_SESSION['MySesVal'] * 4; I get 0. So is it because the actual $MyVal variable has some XML stuff as: SimpleXMLElement Object ( [0] => 8.23 ) So what is the right way to properly assign $MyVal variable to a session variable to do calculations. Please reply. All comments and feedbacks are always welcome. Thank you! Similar TutorialsI was wondering how to write something like this: if (table1.column1 + table2.column2 > table3.column3 then ..... I am confused where to put ( ) and ' I am building a website that uses session variables extensively. The site is getting a little complicated, and I am starting to lose track of which session variables are assigned, and what their values are. Is there some way where I can create a piece of code that will display all of the existing session variables and their values? It's been a while since I've needed to whip anything substantial up from scratch, so my scripting is a little (lot) fast and loose (weird/inefficient) here. I'm trying to mock up a script that's essentially a quiz/survey. There are a handful of topics, each with a few screens of yes/no questions. At the end, it returns a list of recommendations based on the answers gathered. The script is posting back to itself. Using print_r ($_SESSION), it seems like all of the post values for the first screen of questions are being assigned to the session array as expected. When the second screen of questions is answered, their values are assigned as well, but the values for the first set go away completely. This continues through subsequent screens, with the values from the previous screen present and all others before missing. I'd really appreciate a look at my code to see if you tell me the cause or error(s). Thanks! <?php session_start; include('_config.php'); // database connect $dbc = mysqli_connect($CFG->dbhost, $CFG->dbuser, $CFG->dbpass, $CFG->dbname); // set to section 1, page 1 if no values are in _POST array if (($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'GET') || (!isset($_POST['section']))) { $section = 1; $page = 1; } else { // something was posted, so...set those values in session variable foreach($_POST as $key => $data) { $_SESSION[$key] = $data; } // debug: display contents of the session array print_r ($_SESSION); // which section and page? $section = (int) $_POST['section']; $page = (int) $_POST['next']; } // check if last topic $query = "SELECT * FROM hw_topics"; $data = mysqli_query($dbc, $query); if ($section == mysqli_num_rows($data)) { $last_section = true; } else { $last_section = false; } // get current topic name and info $query = "SELECT topic, display_name, pages_in_topic FROM hw_topics WHERE topic_id = '$section'"; $data = mysqli_query($dbc, $query); if (mysqli_num_rows($data) == 1) { $row = mysqli_fetch_array($data); $topic_display_name = $row['display_name']; $pages_in_topic = $row['pages_in_topic']; } // test if last page in topic $topic_pages = $row['pages_in_topic']; if ($page == $topic_pages) { $last_page_in_section = true; } else { $last_page_in_section = false; } // set form action (set to this script or to recommendations when last section is complete if (($last_section == true) && ($last_page_in_section == true)) { $form_action = $CFG->reccomend; } else { $form_action = $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; } // get current page headline $query = "SELECT page_headline FROM hw_pages WHERE topic_id = '$section' AND page_number = '$page'"; $data = mysqli_query($dbc, $query); if (mysqli_num_rows($data) == 1) { // The headline row was found so display the headline $row = mysqli_fetch_array($data); $page_headline = '<h2>' . $row['page_headline'] . For example.....
LRH_calcLevel($LRH_current, $LRH_bankfull); +/- $LRH_totalDepth = $newVar
Which should translate to -10.43 Ft +/- 40 = $newVar (-29.57) <----- What I want
Instead it is showing up as 10.43 Ft +/- 40 = $newVar (-50.43) <----- How it is displaying which is incorrect
Here is the code I am using. The second function is what I am trying to use to create the new variable data based on the calculations above from the data provide via XML. How can I get this to display correctly?

How can I get the $car_object out from the session variable? Please help a novice. Urgent. I don't know why but I'm failing hard at GoogleFu today. I can't find a tutorial on how to store a session id in a cookie and then call it on the server. session_id says it replaces the cookie it makes if you set the id via session_id, even if it's the same id...but I'm not sure if that really matters. Can anyone help point me in the right direction to a good tutorial/give me some insight on this subject? I want to store the session id in a cookie to keep a user logged in for 2 weeks or so (unless they log out of course). I did find some tutorials on how to re-route the session handlers for open/close/read/write session functions which allow me to store the session in a database. Is this what I want? Sorry for the newbie question, Thanks, Justin Here is my code... I need some help with this. A user fills out a form, one of the fields is a zip code field. Here is what I have so far, after the values are submitted into the DB. <?php session_start(); $con = mysql_connect("localhost","peter","abc123"); if (!$con) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } mysql_select_db("my_db", $con); $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM Profile WHERE id='{$_SESSION['id']}"); while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { $_SESSION['id'] = $row['id']; $_SESSION['zip'] = $row['zip']; } mysql_close($con); ?> and then for the weather API, I need to set the stored variable to something $zip = 'stored zip code value'; I am having some problems with part of the code. What is going on is a user registers info with a form and is sent an email with a confirmation link. The info that was in a temp DB table is moved to a member table. All of this works fine, but I am trying to be able to store an ID and username associated with their passkey info and echo that variable out. This part I am having trouble with. Code is here. <? session_start(); include('config.php'); // Passkey t from link $passkey=$_GET['passkey']; $tbl_name1="Profile_temp"; // Retrieve data from table where row matches passkey $sql1="SELECT * FROM $tbl_name1 WHERE confirm_code ='$passkey'"; $result1=mysql_query($sql1); // If successfully queried if($result1){ // Count how many row has this passkey $count=mysql_num_rows($result1); // if passkey is found retrieve info from temporary DB if($count==1){ $rows=mysql_fetch_array($result1); $FirstName=$rows['FirstName']; $LastName=$rows['LastName']; $UserName=$rows['UserName']; $Password= md5($rows['Password']); $Password2=md5($rows['Password2']); $email=$rows['email']; $Zip=$rows['Zip']; $Birthday=$rows['Birthday']; $Security=$rows['Security']; $Security2=$rows['Security2']; $tbl_name2="Profile"; // Insert data that retrieves from "temp_members_db" into table "registered_members" $sql2="INSERT INTO $tbl_name2(`FirstName`,`LastName`,`Username`,`Password`,`Password2`,`email`,`Zip`,`Birthday`,`Security`,`Security2`) VALUES ('$FirstName','$LastName','$UserName','$Password','$Password2','$email','$Zip','$Birthday','$Security','$Security2')"; //echo $sql2; $result2=mysql_query($sql2); } // if passkey is not found, display message "Wrong Confirmation code" else { echo "<h2>Sorry, Your passkey was not found.</h2>"; } while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result2)) { $_SESSION['id'] = $row['id']; $_SESSION['UserName']=$user_name; } // if successfully moved data from table"temp_members_db" to table "registered_members" displays message "Your account has been activated" and don't forget to delete confirmation code from table "temp_members_db" if($result2){ echo "<h2>Your account has been activated, </h2>"; echo "$user_name"; echo"<p>You may now upload a profile picture</p>"; // Delete information of this user from table "temp_members_db" that has this passkey $sql3="DELETE FROM $tbl_name1 WHERE confirm_code = '$passkey'"; $result3=mysql_query($sql3); } } ?> getting an error for this part while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result2)) { $_SESSION['id'] = $row['id']; $_SESSION['UserName']=$user_name; } the error is "Warning: mysql_fetch_assoc(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in confirmation.php on line 62" Hey guys, What would you recommend to store db values for later? the only thing I can come up with is doing it this way: $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM users WHERE name='$user'"); while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { } { and then using the $row['dbvariable'] later is that the best way? Hi all, I need to create a table which holds a list of values, for EG 1 PHP 2 MySQL 3 HTML 4 JS The reason im doing this is so when a user visits X page on my site, they are presented with a list of possible options which they can tick, for instance if you were asked what languages your fluent with you would tick HTML and JS (or w/e applies to you) What would be the best way of constructing the table? Hello! I am designing a user registration form which has some radio buttons for people to select. I am confused as to how I should store the value selected by the user into the database. I am building a CMS for website development. I am ready to use it for the first time on one of my clients. Now, my issue is is how to set up some or one of my table(s) for some areas that my client wants to be able to change in the admin section.
In their website on the front page, I put together this nice block slider. Its 6 blocks with text, a background image and nice effects. At first it was always going to be static, which was no issue at all, but later they came to me and asked if they could be able to change words in the boxes themselves in the admin section..
Of course this can be easily done by creating a table that is associated with this home page block thing and each row in the table will correspond to one of the blocks on the home page.
But I believe there might be an easier way to store this type of data without having to create another table for every feature the client wants to edit, for example they also want to be able to edit a slider on another page.
The WordPress database then came into my mind and how they store most of their data as JSON. So I was then thinking of creating a table named 'modules' for examples with three columns (id, title, data). Then inside the data column store the editable fields as a JSON string object.
For example a row could like like :
1, "Front Page Box Slider", {"slider-home" : [ {"data" : "value", "img_1", "value1"}, {"data" : "value", "img_2", "value2"} ]}
I've been doing a bit of research on this and people have just been saying, never do this if you do want your data to be searched through, which I don't.
Can anyone tell me why or why not I should do this, or maybe a better solution to my problem?
Thank you

(openstreetmap) Question - how can i store the results on a Database - eg mysql or - (if you prefer postgresql) - note: my favorite db - at least at the moment is mysql here the code require 'open-uri' require "net/http" require 'rexml/document' def query_overpass(object_type, left,bottom,right,top, key, value) base_url = "http://www.overpass-api.de/api/xapi?" query_string = "#{object_type}[bbox=#{left},#{bottom},#{right},#{top}][#{key}=#{value}]" url = "#{base_url}#{URI.encode(query_string)}" resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(URI.parse(url)) data = resp.body return data end overpass_result = REXML::Document.new(query_overpass("node", 7.1,51.2,7.2,51.3,"amenity","restaurant|pub|ice_cream|food_court|fast_food|cafe|biergarten|bar|bakery|steak|pasta|pizza|sushi|asia|nightclub")) overpass_result.elements.each('osm/node') {|x| if !x.elements["tag[@k='name']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='name']"].attributes["v"] end print " | " if !x.elements["tag[@k='addr:postcode']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='addr:postcode']"].attributes["v"] print ", " end if !x.elements["tag[@k='addr:city']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='addr:city']"].attributes["v"] print ", " end if !x.elements["tag[@k='addr:street']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='addr:street']"].attributes["v"] print ", " end if !x.elements["tag[@k='addr:housenumber']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='addr:housenumber']"].attributes["v"] end print " | " print x.attributes["lat"] print " | " print x.attributes["lon"] print " | " if !x.elements["tag[@k='website']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='website']"].attributes["v"] end print " | " if !x.elements["tag[@k='amenity']"].nil? print x.elements["tag[@k='amenity']"].attributes["v"] print " | " end puts } look forward to hear from you again - i would love to store it on a mysql - database - if possible. If you would prefer postgresql - then i would takte this one.... ;-) look forward to hear from you again - i would love to store it on a mysql - database - if possible. If you would prefer postgresql - then i would takte this one.... ;-) well - i guess that the answer to this will be the same no matter what language we are using. If the db is a sql database we need to design the database schema and create the tables in the database. The first step in accessing a db in our code is to get a connection to it. If ruby is our choice of language, a search for "ruby sql connector" will give us lots of options to read about. Well - we also can do it in PHP. What do you think!? Next, based on the schema we have designed, we need to create queries suitable for storing the data. We will likely need to consider our transactional model. Again, searching "ruby sql transactional model" will give us plenty of food for thought. Finally, we may want or need to close the connection to the database. I am generating a few different reports through mysql querys and displaying tables. I have a mail script that stores html code into a variable called $message. How can I store all of my queried data into the variable $message? Example of one of the three tables I am displaying and I am wanting to store this whole table into the variable $message. Code: [Select] echo"<h3>Margin Less than 15% for $datequery</h3>"; echo"<table border=1 cellpadding=3><tr><td><center><b>Invoice Number</b></center></td><td><center><b>Invoice Date</b></center></td><td><center><b>Customer Number</b></center></td><td><center><b>Company</b></center></td><td><center><b>Margin</b></center></td></tr>"; while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { $invoice=$row['INVNO']; $invoicedate=$row['INVDTE']; $customernumber=$row['CUSTNO']; $company=$row['COMPANY']; $invoicetotal=$row['ITOTAL']; $invoicecost=$row['ICOST']; @$ABOVE30= @($invoicecost * 100) / $invoicetotal; @$FINAL30=100 - $ABOVE30; $FINAL30=number_format($FINAL30, 2, '.', ''); IF($FINAL30<="15") { echo "<tr><td><center>$invoice</center></td><td><center>$invoicedate</center></td><td><center>$customernumber</center></td><td><center>$company</center></td><td><center>$FINAL30%</center></td></tr>"; } } echo"</table><hr />"; This seems really straight forward but I can't figure out why it's happening. As a part of an account registration script, I'm randomly generating a password using a function called, generatePassword($length,$strength); I hash the password (md5) before putting it in the database but I also email the non-hashed version to the user. My problem is that each time I call the variable, it generates a new password so the one in the database does not match the one received by the user, $user_password_plain = generatePassword($length,$strength); $user_password = md5($user_password_plain); Is there a different way to store the variable so that I can access it later in the script and it will be the same? I tried using a session variable but that didn't seem to work either. Thanks! |
