PHP - Generating Hierarchical Categories Based On Product Row
I need to build a hierarchical product category table with data from another table.
The original product info table has a basic structu ID | SKU | Category1 | Category2 | Category3 1 | 001 | Apparel | Boots | Work Boots 2 | 002 | Apparel | Shirts | Long Sleeve The categories table this is going into: ID | Name | Parent_ID 1 | Apparel | 0 2 | Boots | 1 3 | Work Boots | 2 4 | Shirts | 1 5 | Long Sleeve | 4 I've been trying to use PHP to increment ID's by: SELECT DISTINCT Category1 SELECT DISTINCT Category1,Category2 SELECT DISTINCT Category1, Category2, Category3 Code: [Select] $i='0'; while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { $i++; echo $i . " - ". $row['Category1'] . "<br>"; } One problem is that I can't get the parent ID that was generated in this method. Another is that Category2 and 3 are not uniquely named at all. So my question is, how do I distinctly select all three categories, and get each parent ID also? Similar TutorialsI have got a script which is able to create hierarchical categories infinitely and display them as items in a ul. What I need now is to get these categories to appear in a hierarchical dropdown i.e. the user clicks a menu and the dropdown drops down, then the categories that don't have any children will simply be displayed whereas the categories that do have children will have an arrow pointing to the right and once hovered over all of their children will be displayed in a new menu with their children and so on a nd so forth. Very similar to the way the windows menu bar works except with more levels. Basically I want it to function sort of like a spry menu bar except it can go down then across etc etc and any further categories and sub categories that are added in will be shown. Can anybody help me out with this or perhaps point me in the direction of a tutorial that helps to avhieve this effect. Heres my code that creates them in an unordered list:-- <?php $link = mysqli_connect('localhost','',''); mysqli_select_db($link,'mydb'); $query = mysqli_query($link,'SELECT * FROM nested_categories'); while ( $row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($query) ){ $menu_array[$row['id']] = array('name' => $row['name'],'parent' => $row['parent_id']); } function generate_menu($parent){ $has_childs = false; global $menu_array; foreach($menu_array as $key => $value){ if ($value['parent'] == $parent){ if ($has_childs === false){ $has_childs = true; echo '<ul id="categories">'; } echo '<li>'. $value['name']; generate_menu($key); echo '</li>'; } } if ($has_childs === true) echo '</ul>'; } generate_menu(0); ?> I have made a custom post type for products, and am using a custom taxonomy for the product categories. The thing that I am wondering about is that sometimes a product category is a parent, and sometimes a child, but sometimes both. For instance, if you have a top level category named shoes, then you might have a sub category named Nike. However, Nike also has shirts, so you could say that shoes and shirts were both subcategories of Nike. Do you know what I'm saying? It's like there is no real parent to child relationship, but they are both parents and both children of each other. How do you handle this type of situation?
Hello! I have a database like this: Product Name | Category1 | Category 2 | Category 3 Iphone | Apple | Iphone | WD HD | PC | Hard-drive | External Monitor 17" | LCD Screen| | What I want to do is to allow people to search for any categories and also the junction of the categories. For example, if the the URL is like this &category=External;PC;Hard-Drive it will show WD HD and all the other products which have any combination of these three categories. Another example, if the URL is like &category=Iphone it will show Iphone. If the URL is &category=LCD screen;Apple it will not show anything, because the ; is basically an AND. The problem is that the keywords could be in any category, so a search for a single keyword would have to be made on all the columns and a search for 3 keywords, like the first example, would have to be made 3 times on these columns for the 3 keywords, which would mean 9 searches in total!! How could I do this the fastest way? Hi, I have a trouble figuring out how to properly convert a list of product data from XML into CSV format. My source is a XML file containing a list of products with attributes like color, size, material etc. with the following structu Code: [Select] <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <store> <products> <product> <name>T-Shirt</name> <price>19.00</price> <attributes> <attribute> <name>Color</name> <options> <option> <name>White</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> <option> <name>Black</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> <option> <name>Blue</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> </options> </attribute> <attribute> <name>Size</name> <options> <option> <name>XS</name> <price>-5.00</price> </option> <option> <name>S</name> <price>-5.00</price> </option> <option> <name>M</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> <option> <name>L</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> <option> <name>XL</name> <price>5.00</price> </option> </options> </attribute> </attributes> </product> <product> <name>Sweatshirt</name> <price>49.00</price> <attributes> <attribute> <name>Color</name> <options> <option> <name>White</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> <option> <name>Black</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> </options> </attribute> <attribute> <name>Size</name> <options> <option> <name>XS</name> <price>-10.00</price> </option> <option> <name>M</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> <option> <name>XL</name> <price>10.00</price> </option> </options> </attribute> <attribute> <name>Material</name> <options> <option> <name>Cotton</name> <price>10.00</price> </option> <option> <name>Polyester</name> <price>0.00</price> </option> </options> </attribute> </attributes> </product> <product> <name>Earrings</name> <price>29.00</price> </product> </products> </store> Each product has a number of elements like name, price etc. but also a random number of attributes (like color, size, material etc.) that also have a random number of options. Each option can affect the price of the product, so ordering a XS sized t-shirt can be cheaper than ordering a XL sized t-shirt. I would like to end up with a CSV representing one attribute combination on each line. In my example that would result in 3 colors x 5 sizes = 15 lines for the T-Shirt , 2 colors x 3 sizes x 2 materials = 12 lines for the Sweatshirt and 1 line for the Earrings without any attributes: Code: [Select] name,price,color,size,material T-Shirt,14.00,White,XS, T-Shirt,14.00,Black,XS, T-Shirt,14.00,Blue,XS, T-Shirt,14.00,White,S, T-Shirt,14.00,Black,S, T-Shirt,14.00,Blue,S, T-Shirt,19.00,White,M, T-Shirt,19.00,Black,M, T-Shirt,19.00,Blue,M, T-Shirt,19.00,White,L, T-Shirt,19.00,Black,L, T-Shirt,19.00,Blue,L, T-Shirt,24.00,White,XL, T-Shirt,24.00,Black,XL, T-Shirt,24.00,Blue,XL, Sweatshirt,49.00,White,XS,Cotton Sweatshirt,49.00,Black,XS,Cotton Sweatshirt,59.00,White,M,Cotton Sweatshirt,69.00,Black,M,Cotton Sweatshirt,69.00,White,XL,Cotton Sweatshirt,69.00,Black,XL,Cotton Sweatshirt,39.00,White,XS,Polyester Sweatshirt,39.00,Black,XS,Polyester Sweatshirt,49.00,White,M,Polyester Sweatshirt,49.00,Black,M,Polyester Sweatshirt,59.00,White,XL,Polyester Sweatshirt,59.00,Black,XL,Polyester Earrings,29.00,,, I already managed to generate the CSV Output for simple products like the Earrings and products with just one attribute, but am struggling to come up with a way to generate all possible product attribute combinations for products with more than one attribute. My miserable attempts at this so far have produced following code: Code: [Select] <?php mb_internal_encoding("UTF-8"); header('Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8'); $source = "example.xml"; $handle = fopen($source, "r"); $fp = fopen('export.csv', 'w'); $xml = simplexml_load_file($source); // Generate list of attributes (for csv header etc.) $header_attributes = array(); foreach ($xml->products->product as $product) { if(isset($product->attributes)) { foreach($product->attributes->attribute as $attribute) { array_push($header_attributes, $attribute->name); } } } $header_attributes = array_unique($header_attributes); $csvheader = array( 'name','price' // these exist for all products, could also include weight, image, description, special price etc... ); $static_csvheadercount = count($csvheader); foreach($header_attributes as $attribute) { array_push($csvheader, $attribute); // add variable number of attribute fields to csv header } fputcsv($fp, $csvheader); foreach ($xml->products->product as $product) { // loop through each product if(isset($product->attributes)) $simple = 0; else $simple = 1; if($simple == 1) { // if product is a simple product with no attributes $output=array(); array_push($output,(string)$product->name); array_push($output,(string)$product->price); for($i = $static_csvheadercount + $attribute_position; $i < count($csvheader); $i++) { array_push($output, ''); } fputcsv($fp, $output); } else { // is a configurable product with attributes $json = json_encode($product->attributes); $attributes = json_decode($json, TRUE); $attributes_number = count($product->attributes->attribute); if($attributes_number > 1) { // if product has more than 1 attributes so we have to generate each attribute combination // // I'm trying to figure out what should happen here // } else { // if product has only one attribute $attributename = (string)$product->attributes->attribute->name; $attribute_position = array_search($attributename, $header_attributes); $options_number = count($product->attributes->options->option); $pos = 1; foreach($attributes['attribute']['options']['option'] as $option) { $output=array(); array_push($output,(string)$product->name); array_push($output,(string)$product->price); for($i = $static_csvheadercount - 1; $i < ($static_csvheadercount + $attribute_position); $i++) { array_push($output, ''); } $output[$static_csvheadercount + $attribute_position] = $option['name']; for($i = $static_csvheadercount + $attribute_position; $i < count($csvheader) - 1 ; $i++) { array_push($output, ''); } fputcsv($fp, $output); $pos++; } $output=array(); array_push($output,(string)$product->name); array_push($output,(string)$product->price); for($i = $static_csvheadercount; $i < count($csvheader); $i++) { array_push($output, ''); } fputcsv($fp, $output); } } } ?> I've been stuck at this problem for hours unable to figure out a solution. Can someone give a few tips or pointer how to achieve the output for products with multiple attributes? Hi all,

Hello Guys, Need a little help here. I have a db structure like this cat_id | cat_name | cat_status | parent_id 1 First Test 1 0 2 Just testing 1 0 4 Books 1 2 5 Cars 1 0 6 Ford 1 5 If the parent_id = 0 it is considered to be the parent. If it is a number it is considered a child and referencing the parent I want to be able to query the database and grab the cat and the sub cat and echo it on my page. Its like a classified ads application. Here is my while loop that I currently have which only echo's out the parent category. I would like to echo the child category under the respective parent category. I think I would have to do a loop within a loop, but not sure how to do it.. $query = "SELECT * FROM ad_category WHERE cat_status='1' && Parent_id='0' ORDER BY cat_name"; $result = mysql_query($query); while($row = mysql_fetch_row($result)) { $cat_name = $row[1]; $cupper = UCWords($cat_name); echo $cupper . "<br>" ; } Thanks for your help in advance Hi all, Here i have a serious problem. I want to sought it out using PHP and MySQL only. How this could be done? Thanks, Heshan. Hi there, I'm trying to get the full Product Name in the <title> of each of the product pages - I can't seem to figure out what to put in the product_info.php... I've tried a few different options but I'm not great with php Here's what I have currently but it creates errors... <script language="javascript"><!-- document.write('<title><?php echo TITLE; ?> : <?php echo $product_info['products_name']; ?> </title>'); //--></script> Hope someone can help - thanks so much! id Name Owner 1 Root 0 2 Child 1 3 Child 1 4 Level-2-Child 2 So, I want to get an element, then get all elements that are either direct or indirect children of it. So - getChildren(2) should return 2 and 4, because 4 is a direct child of 2. And getChildren(1) should return 1, 2, 3, 4 because all items are a child of root. I'm pretty sure it needs to be done with a recursive function. Can someone help me out? I have been going in circles about how to handle the issue that I have come up with and was hoping that someone could provide a different method. Basically I want to be able to create an infinite number of categories and allow them to be assigned to other categories then making them subcategories/sub sub categories if you will. My initial plan was to use a method I have used before by just saving the parent id of the subcategories and recursively going through the data. However, I am not to fond of this because of the inefficiency that it provides. I did some research and found that method is called the "Adjacency List". I also found another way to do it called "Nested Sets" which seems to be much more efficient but its a little harder to understand / maintain. I was hoping that someone here could offer alternatives to both of these methods that will allow me to keep the efficiency of "Nested Sets" but providing the ease of use / maintenance of the "Adjacency List". Thanks in advance for any help. Hi, Please help I need to make categories with su-categories I made in my database tables like this table = categories cid | cat_id | parent_list | categ_name | type 1 0 1 General category c 2 1 1,2 sub category s 3 1 1,3 sub category s 4 1 1,2 sub category s 5 1 1,5 sub category s 6 5 1,5,6 sub sub category s 7 0 7 General category2 c 8 7 7,8 sub category s I need to view this in dropdown menu using parent_list column I have two tables, one called Categories and one called SubCategories. Each subcategory needs to be displayed under its parent category in a HTML table. So I have this code, but I don't know how to list each Sub-Category under each Category in a HTML table. <?php require ('includes/initialize.php'); require 'classes/database.class.php'; $sql = "SELECT * FROM Categories, SubCategories WHERE Categories.ID = SubCategories.CatID"; $Result = $database->Query($sql); $Data = $database->Fetch($Result); ?> Hello dear friends, If i've the following ( categories - gifts ) <?PHP $sql ="select * from categories"; $result= mysql_query($sql); while($line= mysql_fetch_array($result)){ $qryrow="select * from gifts where gifts='$line[1]'"; } ?> it means select category and its gifts now my question how to view it all in table for example if i add Code: [Select] <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=1 width="100%"> <TBODY> <TR> <TD> <?php echo "". $line[1].""; ?> </TD> </TR> </TBODY> </TABLE> it will show me like this How can i make it like this my problem how to make table like this and where to put the php variable .. thanks Hi guys I need help writing a php script I have a table 'categories' with fields 'id' 'cat_name' 'parent_id' the 'parent_id' is just an the id field.. I want to create a way to have unlimited sub categories so I can have categorie -> sub-categories categories -> sub-categories -> sub-categories categories -> products How can i make unlimited sub categories when i have this mysql fields: id, name, parent Code: [Select] $query = "SELECT * FROM cats"; $result = mysql_query($query); while ($var = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { echo $var['name']; // now i need here some code for sub cats, but sub cat in subcat :( } Can someone help me? Hi there, I have a piece of code that takes all posts with the category of 'model' and puts it on the models page. It then displays the post as a gallery using fancy box. The problem is I want all posts with the category of 'faces' to go on the faces page, but at the moment they are appearing on both pages. Here is the code I have. Computers -> Motherboards -> Model 1 -> Model 2 -> etc. Monitors -> Model 1 -> Model 2As you can see max level of sub-category will be 2+root. Here is the perfect example what I want to do http://3docean.net/category I don't understand(know) also how exactly will look my database table? How to store categories and sub-categories. I don't want someone to write full code etc as I want to learn it but will be great if you guys can show me some good tutorial how to make it mostly database structure. Thank you in advance! p.s.
