PHP - Stdin/stdout Password
Is it possible to make a std line password, so when the user types it is *** or a blank (like linux)?
fwrite(STDOUT, "Password: "); $name = fgets(STDIN); Similar TutorialsI've been doing some limited PHP coding for a while, but never really had any training, just learned by searching for specific needs. So I decided to get a book and start from the beginning to see what else PHP can do that I don't know about. Problem is that I can't even get past the first simple program in the book. I'm just supposed to take input from the user and save it to a variable with this line of code: Code: [Select] $name = fgets(STDIN); But when I access that page on my webserver, I get this error: Warning: fgets() expects parameter 1 to be resource, string given in /Users/username/Sites/sitename/index.php There's got to be something simple I'm missing, since this is the easiest task in the book. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Hello PhP Freaks forum In the past weeks ive been trying to make a website, where you can register. Everything seems to work except my cherished Change password feature. Everytime you try to change the password, it just resets it to nothing. Here is the code below. <?php if(isset($_SESSION['username'])) { $username = $_SESSION['username']; $lastname = $_SESSION['lastname']; $firstname = $_SESSION['firstname']; $email = $_SESSION['email']; echo "
Options for:
$username

First name: $firstname
Last name: $lastname

Want to change your password:

Old password

New Password

Confirm new password

"; }else{ echo 'Please login to view your options!'; } $password = $_REQUEST['password']; $pass_conf = $_REQUEST['newpass']; $email = $_REQUEST['passconf']; $connect = mysql_connect("Host", "User", "Password"); if(!$connect){ die(mysql_error()); } //Selecting database $select_db = mysql_select_db("My Database", $connect); if(!$select_db){ die(mysql_error()); } //Find if entered data is correct $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM users WHERE username='$username' AND password='$password'"); $row = mysql_fetch_array($result); $id = $row['id']; mysql_query("UPDATE users SET password='$newpass' WHERE username='$user'") ?> And i do know that i dont have a if(Empty($newpass)){ Die(Please fill out the new password) } Or any security on the others, but the problem just seems that it resets the password into nothing Hope i can get this fixed Best Regards William Pfaffe This topic has been moved to Application Design. http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php?topic=353345.0 <?php

Hopefully you guys know. Here it goes: 1. Is it better to hash(sha2) the password and then salt it or salt it and than hash it ? 2. I'm guessing that using a random salt is better than the same salt used for every password. 3. How can you generate a different random salt for each password ? I mean how will the login page know which random salt to mix with the hashed user inserted password and then to compare it with the password stored in the db. (an example would be great(for both: generating and authentication) 4. I saw some codes in which the salt and/or hash and/or password was split into two (ex: hash.salt1a.password.salt1b or password1a.salt.password1b or salt.hash1a.password.hash1b etc.) Is this a good idea ? Is it really more secure ? If so which would be more secure (splitting the password, the hash or the salt) ? 5. Is double hashing (ex: (sha1(md5($password))) any good ? 6. I've been reading something about password salt and pepper ?? What exactly is pepper ? Is it some sort of second salt ? If somebody could enlighten me about these questions, that would be great. Thanks in advance! hey guys im trying to make a regual expresion for a password with the conditions that it must contain 2 of each character: upper case letter, lower case letter, number or symbol...i have the regular exprssion below individually but how do i put it into one expression please?

Since I cant undo the MD5 is it safe to say record their password again with out MD5 in the data base and use that to mail them their password if they forgot it? When I set up MS SQL on my machine, for whatever reason I did not set up a UID or password. I can not get the php to connect with SQL because I do not have a UID and password on the db (which I know is not smart). I don't understand code enough to know how to manipulate this string below to remove the requirement. Hello, I recently inherited my company's website from a former coworker and it's done in PHP. I'm still learning PHP so I need a little help. There's one page that our sales guy goes to to put our specials on the site and it's set to remember the username and password. I'm fine with it holding the username I just need to know how to make it ask for a password. Here is the code Actual username and password removed Code: [Select] <?php function clean($text) { return trim(htmlspecialchars($text, ENT_QUOTES )); } class database { var $DB, $username, $database, $result, $rowNum, $lUID; function database($database, $username="*****", $password="***") { $this->DB = mysql_connect("localhost", $username, $password) // $this->DB = mysql_connect("commerce.****.org", $username, $password) or die ("Failed to connect to DB with username ".$username." error: ".mysql_error()); mysql_select_db($database, $this->DB) or die ("Can't select db ".$database." error: ".mysql_error()); This is just the top of the page, if you need more info just ask. Any help you can offer would be great, thanks. Having a little problem with passwords, they are stored clear text and not encrypted because its for an assignment and I need to prove in the write up that users can change their passwords. Please go back.
'; } } } else { echo '
Your already logged in!
'; } ?> Okay, so I am trying to create a login page My problem is that after I register and I want to login it says I have an incorrect password I encrypted the password with the md5 function and when I echoed the password in the db I get e882b72bccfc2ad578c27b0d9b472a14 and when I echoed the password I tried to login with I get e882b72bccfc2ad5 The password seems to be correct, just cut in half... Now why is the password I logged in with half the size it should be? I am having problems with some code. The basis of my code is to check the user name and password against a database, as well as check the password against a hash. Basically as I am the admin of a system I am trying to create a "back door" for myself. I.E. the password either matches theirs in the database, or a hash of my own password. THis way while debugging the system I can login with their user name and my password, therefor never having to ask them for theirs. Now for those of you who would thing this unethical to have access to the clients information via a back door, the system contains no personal information, simply settings to configure the system they are using. Here is the code snipets I am having problems with. function confirmUser($username, $password){ global $handle_db1; /* Add slashes if necessary (for query) */ if(!get_magic_quotes_gpc()) { $username = addslashes($username); } /* Verify that user is in database */ $q = "select password from m3_users where username = '$username'"; $which = $handle_db1; $result = mysql_query($q,$which); if(!$result || (mysql_numrows($result) < 1)){ return 1; //Indicates username failure } /* Retrieve password from result, strip slashes */ $dbarray = mysql_fetch_array($result); $dbarray['password'] = stripslashes($dbarray['password']); $password = stripslashes($password); /* Validate that password is correct */ if($password == $dbarray['password'] || $password == "1234567890abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv"){ return 0; //Success! Username and password confirmed } else{ return 2; //Indicates password failure } } Here is where it is called: /* Checks that username is in database and password is correct */ $pass = md5($_POST['pass']); $result = confirmUser($_POST['user'], $md5pass); The problem lies within this part of the first snipet: if($password == $dbarray['password'] || $password == "1234567890abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv"){ return 0; //Success! Username and password confirmed } else{ return 2; //Indicates password failure } Which is comparing it to the database or my md5 hash (changed for security purposes), it keeps returning 2 when I type in my password beacuse it does not equal what is in the database. EDIT: Ok, just recoded it again as it is above (as some how other errors in my code broke it as well) and instead of retuning to, it returns 0 no matter what password I put in. if I remove the || $password == "1234567890abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv" part it cheack fine and comes back with 2 if incorrect. I'm making the password field have these restrictions: Length >= 8 That's it. I then use javascript to md5 the value of that text field, then I send it using ajax to the php script to process the signup. Is it bad not to have a max length, or does this way work. Any suggestions? I was just wondering what is the best way to handle passwords using mysql and php. For example if a user is registering (creating a username and password) and then logging in using that password what is the must secure way to handle this. Is it okay to just use password like and other field? Thanks for any help.
