PHP - Pass Session Through Pages
Hello. Basically I've created a login script. Works great. It sends users to different locations depending on what type of user they are. Now I have also created a Members account. Upon logging in this user should go to the members area. That all works fine!
In the login script i stored a few session variable like username, access_level and so on. Now in the members area I am trying to make the page echo the name of the current user. I have been stairing at my code too long and can no longer see why nothing is echo'ing. Any ideas. I thought that the session_start() would continue the session in the next page and throughout the site until the person logs off and runs the session_destroy()! Is this not correct. I have a page that contains a List box containing a list of categories taken from a mysql database, 4 iframe elements and 4 submit button (code to follow)
When an item is selected from the List box the onchange event submits the page to jobs.php and loads it into the joblist iframe. Once the iframe is loaded and visible it makes the "Add Job To Category" submit button visible. This all works great
When I click the "Add Job To Category" Submit button it loads Jobnew.php into the jobed iframe this is working but I can not seem to figure out how to pass the selected item from the List box using this submit button
I hope I am clear in my question if not please advise any help is very much appreciated....

Unfortunately I have no code for this yet cuz I don;t even know if its possible... I am programming an application that is used by a couple of stores, which could end up being a lot of stores. Anyways, the basis is that the stores would, though a separate application (and therefore separate database) create a username and password, I now want to use this username and password to do the following 1. Allow them to login to my application using the same username and password 2. I want the store the username in a session to pull tables based on the username from my database For instance, a user has the login store123, after loggin in it now pulls the information from the tables store123_items, store123_prices, store123_settings, etc. Now my database will have quite a lot of store###_tables I am, sadly, a noobie to PHP and I do recall seeing an article (somewhere on the net, and I stupidly forgot to bookmark it, knowing I would need it eventually) on how to access multiple databases easily. Now because they are both under my account I can use the same username and password for both, its accessing the MySQL username/password database and storing the info I know I am lacking on how to do it. The registration systems works well, as does the login BUT I am having difficulty with the next stage. How do I then 'capture' the username and password that were entered by the user and get the PHP page I want to protect to check that these are valid? I made a couple test pages to check and confirmed that the only issue is the session variables. Here is the test I performed. I want to transfer the value selected by user to a session so that I can load the value in other pages. The value of posts per page is carried by variable $ppp; so, file1 contains the code $_SESSION['ppp'] = $ppp; That seems to work great; the system updates correctly the session's value as user submits different numbers of posts-per-page.
The problem is in page2.php: it doesn't update to the new user's selection; I already have a session active in that page so I don't need session_start(). To call the session, I use the line $ppp=$_SESSION['ppp']; When user changes the selection from 50 to 100 posts per age, for example, the value of page1.php changes as expected, but the value transferred to page2.php doesn't change, appears to remain with the default value the page loads with. I don't know if the problem is that I already have a session going. Can you have more than one session running simultaneously in a page? Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!
Sept I work with a large codebase and I have this situation come up fairly often:
the legacy class has large objects such as:
$design->motor->dimensions->a; $design->motor->dimensions->bd; $design->specifications->weight; $design->data->height; //etcWhen I create a new class, that class sometimes operates on the specific data, so say:

(new MyClass())->compute($design->specifications->weight, $design->data->height, $design->motor->dimensions->a);
CONS: Potential issue: if design specs change and I need to change things parameters in "compute" function, I need to "re-key" the variables I pass to the function, and adjust things accordinly in MyClass as wel.
PROS: only the exact data is being passed, and this data can come from anywhere it is viable, so in effect the function is fairly well separated, I think.
Alternative option for me is to pass the entire design object, i.e
class MyClass

public function compute(&$design) //can also be done via DI through a setter or constructor.
{
print $design->specifications->weight;
print ($design->data->height + $design->motor->dimensions->a);
//stuff
}
}
(new MyClass())->compute($design);
PROS: In this case when things change internally in which variables are needed and how things are computed, I only need to change the code in compute function of the class itself.
CONS: MyClass now needs to be aware of how $design object is constructed.
When it comes to this parameter passing, and Dependency Injection like this in general, does Computer Science advocate a preference on this issue? Do I pass the entire object, or do I pass only the bits and pieces I need?
I'm trying to get a simple table to display and am not sure how to make it happen. Table will have just 2 columns. A TIME and an EVENT. What I want to have happen is for the first row to show the TIME and next to that, the EVENT. If a TIME has more than one event going I want the next row to show an empty first cell and then the second event below the first. If I set up the loop the only way I know how (so far) it would also output the TIME value again and again as many times as there were events for that same time. I'm making a simple login system with MySQL and PHP (very simple, I'm just starting with PHP). The MySQL portion is done, but I need to ensure only people who are logged in can see certain content. To check if people are logged in, my website checks that they have the $_SESSION['user'] variable set. If it is set, then it lets them continue through the website, if not, it tells them to login. Is that enough security, or can people simply inject a session cookie into their browser to spoof that they are logged in? My idea was to generate a session key cookie when they login (just a random string of letters and numbers) and store that in the database, then on every page, check to make sure their session key is the same thing that's in the database. Is this necessary? It seems expensive. Just curious how other people feel about this. I am working on an application where a lot of info is pulled from MySQL and needed on multiple pages.
Would it make more sense to...
1. Pull all data ONCE and store it in SESSION variables to use on other pages
2. Pull the data from the database on each new page that needs it
I assume the preferred method is #1, but maybe there is some downside to using SESSION variables "too much"?
Side question that's kind of related: As far as URLs, is it preferable to have data stored in them (i.e. domain.com/somepage.php?somedata=something&otherdata=thisdata) or use SESSION variables to store that data so the URLs can stay general/clean (i.e. domain.com/somepage.php)?
Both are probably loaded questions but any possible insight would be appreciated.

If not redirect and show the error. Now ive tried it and even when get/getget is set it still redirects, probably something silly. Care to share anyone? Harry. |
