PHP - Display Search Results On Multiple Pages
Hello everyone,
Very new to coding - enjoying it but struggling! I think I'm trying to do something pretty common but I seem to have come up against a complete wall now and after hours/days searching the internet and reading books I'm completely stuck! I'm trying to write some code to search a MySQL database of products, then display the results. For some search results there will be lots of products so I want to display 10 products on the first page then allow visitors to go to the next page to see another 10, and so on - a type of pagination, as they should then be able to click back to see the last page etc. I've got to the point of being able to display the first 10 search results, but I can't figure out at all how to create some kind of page scrolling/pagination system. Please, does anybody have any ideas?? I've attached my code, I hope this is the correct way of doing things here. Many thanks for your time! The PHP search code... Code: [Select] <?php //opens connection to mysql server $dbc = mysql_connect('localhost'); if (!$dbc) { die('Not connected :' . mysql_error()); } echo "Connected to mysql database<br />"; //select database $db_selected = mysql_select_db("NAME_OF_DATABASE", $dbc); if (!$db_selected) { die ("Cannot connect :" . mysql_error()); } echo "Connected to database<br /><hr />"; echo "Here are your results"; $term = $_POST['term']; $category = $_POST['category']; $brand = $_POST['brand_name']; $sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM products where product_name like '%$term%' AND category_name like '%$category%' AND brand_name like '%$brand%' LIMIT 0, 10"); { while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($sql)){ echo "<table border='1' width='100%'> "; echo "<tr>"; echo "<td style='vertical-align:top' width='25%'>" . '<img src="', $row['image_url'], '" alt="', $row['product_name'], '" width="100" height="100" />' . "</td>"; echo "<td style='vertical-align:top' width='50%'>" . $row['product_name']; echo "<br />"; echo "<span style='font-size: 10px'>" . $row['description'] . "</span>" . "</td>"; echo "<td style='vertical-align:top' width='25%'>" . $row['price']; echo "<br />"; echo "<br />"; echo "<hr />"; echo "$row['merchant_name'] </td>"; echo "</tr>"; } echo "</table>"; } ?> Similar Tutorials In the code below, I am trying to produce a google-like page where the user can type keywords and pages of search results are displayed. The main difficulty I am encountering is that when the browser changes pages, it forgets everything about current data. Perhaps I should include the display of pages inside the HTML form ? How can I fix this code ? Here is the contents of my searchpage.php file : <?php $keywords=''; $display_search_results=''; if(isset($_POST['search_submitted'])) { $keywords=$_POST['keywords']; $search_results=array(); $totalNbrOfItems=20; for($k=1;$k<=$totalNbrOfItems;$k++) { $search_results[$k]='Your keywords '$keyowrds.' have been found in item number '.$k; } $nbrOfItemsParPage = 5; $nbrOfPages = ceil($totalNbrOfItems / $nbrOfItemsParPage); // Compute current page $current_page = (isset($_GET['page']))?intval($_GET['page']):1; $display_pages=($nbrOfPages<2)?'<p>Page : ':'<p>Pages : '; for ($i = 1 ; $i <= $nbrOfPages ; $i++) { if ($i == $current_page) //No link to the current page { $display_pages=$display_pages.$i.' '; } else { $display_pages=$display_pages.'<a href="searchpage.php?'. 'page='.$i.'">'. $i . '</a> '; } } $display_pages=$display_pages.'</p>'; $display_items=''; $start=$nbrOfItemsPerPage*($current_page-1); for($k=1;$k<=$nbrOfItemsParPage;$k++) { $display_items=$display_items.($search_results[$start+$k]).'<br>'; } $display_search_results=$display_pages.$display_items; } echo '<form method="post" action="searchpage.php">'. ' Type your keywords here : <br><br>'. '<textarea cols="65" rows="1" '. 'id="keywords_id" name="keywords">'.$keywords.'</textarea>'. '<input type="submit" name="search_submitted" id="search_submitted_id" value="Search" /> '. '</fieldset>'. '</form>'; echo $display_search_results; ?> I've read through a few examples of how to paginate query results, but with my currently php skills I don't understand them, or they do not fit into my code. I wondered if I could make my own, and the logic behind this code makes sense to me, but it's still not working. Here is the code: <?php if (!$Start) { $Start = 0; } else { $Start=$_POST['Start']; } $crittercount = 120; $numpages = $crittercount / 30; $pagei = 1; $pagereit = 1; echo '<p><center> <FORM method=POST action=testpagination.php> <SELECT NAME="Start"> <OPTION>Page 1'; while ($pagereit < $numpages) { $pagei = $pagei + 30; echo '<OPTION value='.$pagei.'>'; $pagereit = $pagereit + 1; echo "Page: " .$pagereit; } echo '</SELECT>'; echo'<input type=submit value=Go></FORM><p>'; echo $Start; ?> The test site is he http://lab-lib.com/felishorns/Felishorns/websitetest/testpagination.php $crittercount is a variable that changes depending on the main $query. This query is invisible, and is used to pull a count for all the results in total. I am modifying it with $Start to create a second query which the viewer sees. $queryF = $query . " LIMIT " . $Start . ", 30"; The idea is that $Start changes depending on the value selected, thereby changing the query. In this test code, I've simply echoed the $Start value of that page, to see if the code is working, and it's not changing. What's wrong with this code? Is it not possible to have a form lead to the same link of the page it's on? Does the variable not become updated? Thanks in advance. Need help to correct my cording! I want to limited search results by 5 items on one page.
Don't know how correctly to add limit: "limit $page1,5".
When I add it: $sql = "SELECT * FROM data GROUP BY city ORDER BY city limit $page1,5";
it doesn't limit searching result by pages.

I am querying a database for results of listings that are in a database these listings are displayed on the page in a form. I am wanting each listing to be on a different page. Below is my code. Code: [Select] $lim=1; if (!isset($s) || $s < 1 || !is_numeric($s)) { $s = 1; } $start = ($s - 1) * $lim; $sql = "select id,bussimg,imagewidth,imageheight,email,usridm,company,businesscategory,address1,address2,state,city,zip,website,email,repname,description,phonenumber,country,status from $approvecheckbusinesses where usridm='$user_id'"; $result=db_query($sql); $countpages = $sql; $sql = $sql . " order by id asc limit $start, $lim"; $result=db_query($sql); $pages = ceil(mysql_num_rows(mysql_query($countpages)) / $lim); $result=db_query($sql); for ($i = 0; $i < mysql_num_rows($result); $i++) { $Listid= mysql_result($result, $i, "id"); $usridm= mysql_result($result, $i, "usridm"); $CompanyName= mysql_result($result, $i, "company"); $realname= mysql_result($result, $i, "repname"); $email= mysql_result($result, $i, "email"); $BusinessCategory= mysql_result($result, $i, "businesscategory"); $status= mysql_result($result, $i, "status"); echo ("FORM IS TO BE DISPLAYED HERE"); } if ($pages > 1) { echo("<p align=left style='font-size: 85% color=white'>"); for ($i = 1; $i <= $pages; $i++) { echo("["); if ($i == $s) {echo("<b>");} else {echo("<a id=home_offerLink href='index.html?EditMemberListing&user_id=$user_id&s=$i'>");} echo("Page $i"); if ($i == $s) {echo("</b>");} else {echo("</a>");} echo("] "); } echo("</p>") Page Numbers here using the above code.. The problem I seem to be running into is that it only displats the first record. The page numbers show up page 1 page 3 page 2 and three are blank there is no mysql error or anything for some reason I only get that first result out of three Hi guys, I have a php file that will go to a site and scrape the data I need. However this site is setup to use pagination so when I try to scrape all the players names I have to do separate queries to search each page. Is there a way to find out by using code how many pages there are and query all the pages at same time? I use this code Code: [Select] <?php //first page //turn error reporting on libxml_use_internal_errors(true); //get data from this page $dom = new DOMDocument; $dom->loadHTMLFile('http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/76.73.3.42:1716/top_players/?searchipp=50#search'); $xpath = new DOMXPath($dom); // Get the total player count $rows2 = $xpath->query('//div[@class="block774"]/div'); // Get the rows from the search list $rows = $xpath->query('//table[@class="table_lst table_lst_spn"]/tr'); for ($i=1; $i<$rows->length-1; $i++) { $row = $rows->item($i); // Get the columns for a row $cols = $row->getElementsByTagName('td'); // Get the player rank (1st column) echo 'Rank:'.trim($cols->item(0)->textContent).PHP_EOL; // Get the player name (2nd column) echo 'Name:'.trim($cols->item(1)->textContent).PHP_EOL; // Get the player score (3rd column, actually 4th but number 3 is hidden) echo 'Sco '.trim($cols->item(3)->textContent).PHP_EOL; echo "<br />"; } ?> <?php //secondpage //turn error reporting on libxml_use_internal_errors(true); //get data from this page $dom = new DOMDocument; $dom->loadHTMLFile('http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/76.73.3.42:1716/top_players/?searchipp=50&searchpge=2#search'); $xpath = new DOMXPath($dom); // Get the rows from the search list $rows = $xpath->query('//table[@class="table_lst table_lst_spn"]/tr'); for ($i=1; $i<$rows->length-1; $i++) { $row = $rows->item($i); // Get the columns for a row $cols = $row->getElementsByTagName('td'); // Get the player rank (1st column) echo 'Rank:'.trim($cols->item(0)->textContent).PHP_EOL; // Get the player name (2nd column) echo 'Name:'.trim($cols->item(1)->textContent).PHP_EOL; // Get the player score (3rd column) echo 'Sco '.trim($cols->item(3)->textContent).PHP_EOL; echo "<br />"; } ?> I also have to go to that website first to see how many pages there are so I can have enough queries. I'm new to php and been trying to follow along with different tutorials to try and build my own site, i followed a tutorial on making a search feature for the site and have it working perfectly, but i want to change the way how to search displays the results. I want to make it display them how there displayed on the index page. here is the index page how there displayed <div id="table"> <table> <tr class="top"> <th>Account</th> <th>Country</th> <th>Info</th> <th>Login</th> <th>Pass</th> <th>Price</th> <th>Buy</th> </tr> <?php $class = 'grey'; ?> <?php $items = getItems(); ?> <?php if(empty ($items)): ?> <h3>No Items Found</h3> <?php else: ?> <?php foreach($items as $item): ?> <?php $class = ($class == 'grey') ? 'grey2' : 'grey'; ?> <tr class="<?php echo $class; ?>"> <td><?php echo $item['item_account']; ?></td> <td><?php echo $item['item_country']; ?></td> <td><?php echo $item['item_info']; ?></td> <td><?php echo maskUser($item['item_login']); ?></td> <td><?php echo maskPass($item['item_pass']); ?></td> <td><?php echo $item['item_price']; ?> </td> <td><form method="post" action="https://sci.libertyreserve.com/"><input type="submit" name="buy" value="Buy" class="button" /></form></td> </tr> <?php endforeach; ?> <?php endif; ?> how the search is display if (strlen($search) <= 2) { echo 'Search keyword is too short.'; } else { echo "You searched for <b>$search</b><hr size='1'>"; $search_exploded = explode(" ", $search); foreach($search_exploded as $search_each) { $x++; if ($x == 1) $construct .= "item_account LIKE '%$search_each%'"; else $construct .= " OR item_account LIKE '%$search_each%'"; } $construct = "SELECT * FROM items WHERE $construct"; $run = mysql_query($construct); $foundnum = mysql_num_rows($run); if ($foundnum == 0) { echo 'No results found.'; } else { echo "$foundnum results found!</p>"; while ($numrows = mysql_fetch_assoc($run)) { $item_id = $numrows['item_id']; $itemAccount = $numrows['item_account']; $itemI = $numrows['item_info']; $itemLogin = $numrows['item_login']; $itemPass = $numrows['item_pass']; $itemPrice = $numrows['item_price']; echo " <b>$itemAccount</b><br /> $itemI <br /> " . maskUser($itemLogin) . '<br />' . maskPass($itemPass, 0) . '<br />'; } } } my question is im not sure how to edit the search code to display the results in the same format as the index page thanks I have a simple (1 table, 14 fields) database. I'm using 9 separate search boxes from my search page : http://www.cinemaposter.com/database.html There are currently 162 entries. Hitting "submit" throws them all out, same with valid input into any box, with the exception of "country" - example : entering "F" gives 20results; "PL" gives 34 results. Here's my code (to simplify, I only went down to the 4th box ('country' - the last and only one giving correct results). I'm one sorry newbie.... please help ! Here's the code : ------------------ <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-html40-19980424/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <title>Search Results</title> <meta name="generator" content="BBEdit 6.5"> <style type="text/css"> td { color: #000000; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; } </style> </head> <body> <?php $link = mysql_connect("xxxx", "xxxx", "xxxx") or die("Could not connect"); ///print "Connected successfully<BR>"; mysql_select_db("xxxx") or die("Could not select database"); { $Author = $_POST['Author']; $sql = "SELECT * FROM posters WHERE Author LIKE '%$Author%'"; } { $Title = $_POST['Title']; $sql = "SELECT * FROM posters WHERE Title LIKE '%$Title%'"; } { $Originaltitle =$_POST['Originalitle']; $sql="SELECT * FROM posters WHERE Originaltitle LIKE '%$Originaltitle%'"; } { $Country =$_POST['Country']; $sql="SELECT * FROM posters WHERE Country LIKE '%$Country%'"; } $result = mysql_query ($sql) or die("Query failed : " . mysql_error()); $numrs = mysql_num_rows($result); if ($numrs > 0){ if ($numrs==1){ print ("<p><font face=\"Arial\"><b>There is $numrs record in our database.</B> <BR><BR>"); }elseif($numrs>1){ print ("<p><font face=\"Arial\"><b>There are $numrs records in our database. </B><BR><BR>");//Apparently, he wan't to be able to search again...</b><form method \"POST\" action=\"$PHP_SELF\">Search Again:"); } echo("<a href='javascript:history.go(-1)'>Go Back</a></p>"); print("<P align=center>Click on the column heading links to sort the results.<br><br />"); print ("<TABLE CELLPADDING=\"1\" CELLSPACING=\"2\" BORDER=\"0\">\n"); PRINT ("<TR BGCOLOR=\"#FFFF77\"> <TD COLSPAN=2><P align=center>Author</td> <TD><P align=center>Title</TD> <TD><P align=center>Original Title</TD> <TD><P align=center>Country</TD> <TD><P align=center>Director</TD> <TD><P align=center>Cast</TD> <TD><P align=center>Year</TD> <TD><P align=center>Original Year</TD> <TD><P align=center>Photo</TD> <TD><P align=center>Producer</TD> <TD><P align=center>Circulation</TD> <TD><P align=center>Size</TD> <TD><P align=center>Print type</TD> <TD><P align=center>Remarks</TD></TR>"); $z=1; while ($line = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $num=$z++; //Note here that I'm assigning the found objects new names (indicated by lowercase) to that php wont get confused..... $auth=$line['Author']; $title=$line['Title']; $originaltitle=$line['Originaltitle']; $country=$line['Country']; $director=$line['Director']; $cast=$line['Cast']; $year=$line['Year']; $originalyear=$line['Originalyear']; $producer=$line['Producer']; $circ=$line['Circulation']; $size=$line['Size']; $print=$line['Print']; $remarks=$line['Remarks']; $pict=$line['Picture']; //Set the formatting $bgcolor = ($i++ & 1) ? Ok, now say there is a text field, when the user enters their unique string and it finds a match, it displays the data along with it. How can I accomplish this? Im kind of new to mysql, but I know basic SQL. Would be great if somebody could point me in the right direction! Thanks I have a search page and everything works fine but I would like to add the latest 10 rows to the page so there is something to look at or click on before the user searches. The page is at: www.giantstridedives.com/locations. You can see that it's pretty boring. Hit submit and you'll see the entries so far (only 3 right now). I'd like to have the latest 10 display there by default but then when a user searches they are replaced by the search results. Make sense? Here's the code I'm using for the search: Code: [Select] <?php if (isset($_POST['submit'])) { require_once('dbconnection.php'); mysqli_select_db($conn, $dbname); $searchterm = $_POST['search']; $searchterm = strip_tags($searchterm); $searchterm = trim ($searchterm); $q ="SELECT * FROM locations WHERE loc_name LIKE '%" . $searchterm . "%' AND loc_approved != '0'"; $r = mysqli_query($conn, $q) or die(mysql_error($q)); $row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($r); $rowcount = mysqli_num_rows($r); } ?> <h1>Search for Scuba Dive Locations</h1> <form id="searchform" name="searchform" method="post" action="index.php"> <input type="text" name="search" id="search_bar" /> <input type="submit" name="submit" id="submit" value="Submit" /> </form> <span style="color: #333;">Search for the name of the location, ie: Devils Den or USS Oriskany.</span><br /> <?php if (isset($_POST['submit'])) { if ($rowcount == 0) { echo "Sorry, but we can not find an entry to match your query: <strong>$searchterm</strong>"; } else { //this tells the table below to display since $totalRows_Products_res is not 0 ?> <table style="font-size: 14px;" border="0" width="650"> <tr> <td colspan="6"><p>You searched for <strong><?php echo $searchterm; ?></strong>. Results are displayed below.</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><strong>Location Name</strong></td> <td><strong>City</strong></td> <td><strong>State</strong></td> <td><strong>Depth (ft)</strong></td> <td><strong>Fees</strong></td> <td><strong>Gear Rentals</strong></td> <td><strong>Map</strong></td> </tr> <?php do { ?> <tr> <td><a href="loc_details.php?loc_id=<?php echo $row ['loc_id']; ?>"> <?php echo $row ['loc_name']; ?> </a></td> <td><?php echo $row ['loc_city']; ?></td> <td><?php echo $row ['loc_state']; ?></td> <td><?php echo $row ['loc_depth']; ?></td> <td>$<?php echo $row ['loc_fee']; ?></td> <td><?php if($row['loc_gear'] == 1) { echo 'Yes'; } else { echo 'No'; } ?></td> <td><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=<?php echo $row ['loc_lat'];?>,<?php echo $row ['loc_lon'];?>" target="_blank">View Map</a></td> </tr> <?php } while ($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($r)); ?> </table> <?php mysqli_free_result($r); } // this closes out results else } ?> I figure I can use the below query to get the results. Code: [Select] select * from table WHERE id > ((SELECT MAX(id) from table) - 10);I'm just not sure how I can display them by default and then have them be replaced by the search results. Anyone have any ideas for me? As always I appreciate the help as I continue to learn this beast. I am pulling some info from a mysql table, checking some logic, and displaying in on a page. The way this is written now it shows all of the items in a one column table, I simply want to break it up into multiple columns (ideally by specifying say 20 items per column). I know I need a counter and a loop but I'm just not sure how it all fits in with my existing program. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is my code Code: [Select] $result2 = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM propertyids ORDER BY propertyname ASC"); while($row2 = mysql_fetch_array($result2)){ ${'resp'.$row2['id']} = curl_multi_getcontent(${'ch'.$row2['id']}); ${'status'.$row2['id']} = strpos(${'resp'.$row2['id']},$httpvar); if(${'status'.$row2['id']} === false) { echo "<tr><td>"; echo "<img src='images/down.png'> <a href='" . $row2['primaryurl'] . Aaron MOD EDIT: [code] . . . [/code] BBCode tags added. Hello, I'm developing a website that asks the user to submit a keyword for a search. The results should display matches for this keyword, but also show matches for related keywords (in order of relevenace!). I'm planning on building up a library of which search terms users use in the same sessions (e.g. if someone searches for "it jobs" and "php jobs", I'll know the terms are correlated), and I'll also measure the click-through rates of the items on the results list. I've been spending all weekend trying to map out the design for this but it's proving incredibly complicated and I think the solution is likely to be on the internet somewhere already?! Please could someone point me in the right direction if you've come accross this problem before? Thanks a million, Stu Hello, Does anyone know a tutorial I can follow to create my own search engine over the items I have in my SQL database? I find a lot of tutorials but they are all 'one word searches' which means if you type two words you will get all results that contain either word (too many hits). If the search engine tutorial displays result with AJAX even better. Thanks for help. df Ok, so I have grabbed a free template and attempted to put a dynamic table into one of the div's. I've got it to work on on my index.php, but I copied and pasted the entire code into member2.php and only changed the query and altered the table just a little bit For some reason though my table doesn't show up on the member2.php even though 90% of the code is the same. I put the var_dump in there just to make sure the data was being retrieved from the database, but the table should be positioned where the var_dump displays on the page Hi all How do I modify the below code to search multiple tables in mySQL database? $query = "select * from store_items where description like \"%$trimmed%\" or title like \"%$trimmed%\" or dimensions like \"%$trimmed%\" order by id ASC"; $numresults=mysql_query($query); $numrows=mysql_num_rows($numresults); It is for a search function and I need it to search another table called 'about_text' and 'faq_text' Thanks Pete Hello, Here's the weird thing, some of the pages shows the results, and some pages just won't show results at all, and I'm not getting any errors here is the one that doesn't Code: [Select] <? function display_mptt($user) { global $db; // retrieve the left and right value of the $root node $sql2 = "SELECT * from mptt where id='25'"; $result2 = mysql_query($sql2 ,$db); if(!$row2 = mysql_fetch_array($result2)) echo mysql_error(); echo '<h1>Users List</h1>'; // start with an empty $right stack $right = array(); // now, retrieve all descendants of the $root node $sql = "SELECT * from mptt WHERE 'left' BETWEEN '".$row2['left']."' When I retrieve a set of results > the defined # per page (such as entering 'WI' for last name), I see the first page correctly, and see the links to next pages, but when I go to the next page there are no results displayed. Same for p.3, etc. So I've looked around enough to know that I need to pass a variable to the subsequent pages, either via a session variable or the URL. I have 2 fields input on the form, as well as a limit and offset. My questions are 1) do I need to pass all 4 and if so then should I use a session variable so the URL does not get too long, and 2) can anyone provide any help with setting session variables and including them to be passed? I'm a newbie and have grabbed some code where I can but this is where i'm stuck. thanks in advance.
