PHP - Scope Of Variables Inside A User-defined Function

Does this have something to do with the scope of variables inside a user-defined function? I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. " are most delicious... OM NOM NOM"; ?> I am essentially using a include file for a mysql connection and based on the connection outcome i am either setting a value to true or false. It prints "Connected succesfully" and what not just fine, but, after that it wont pass on the variables data. I know its the function because, it passes the data if i put the variable before the function... i just dont get it.. any help would be great. Thanks. I know this has to be a simple solution, but ive spent almost 2 hours looking at it trying to figure it out, and have gotten nowhere.... :( and yes, part of that 2 hours was searching google for information about how PHP does variable scope in functions with multiple if statements... and all i could find was that as long as the variable is defined in the function scope, it should be available within the successive if statements. I have some questions about the scope of navigation : if i define a constant like define('constant'), php manuel says it's global, does this mean that i can use of different files also? like, i defined in define.php and used in anotherfile.php, or shoud the latter file be included then? what about file a.php includes file b.php which in turn includes file c.php. I'm obviously trying to echo a string and it won't work that way... but I still gave it a try. How can I do this then? I need "District" to be outputted instead of the actual variable name. I have defined my database connection data as constants in a separate file for security reasons. How can I simply access the data stored in those constants. I have to call the file to get the value of the constants. If I inadvertently call the file twice in a script using an include or require statement, I get an error that I am trying to define the constants again. Can I somehow just call the constants without including the file where they are defined? --Kenoli First off, let me say that this will not be a public use site. We want to create a site that allows us to run queries in our database; this way we don't need to log into the MySQL server when ever we want to run a query. Basically, I am trying to create something as simple as a form with a text-input and a submit button. In this text-input, we will write a query (such as SELECT * FROM xxxx). When we hit submit, we would like to have the MySQL table printed out in a large textbox below. Our database has multiple tables, so something that works across the entire database seamlessly is key. Has anyone ever made anything like this? Is there another way to go about this? We really just want an easy way to run queries on the go. (Something like how classes have parent::?). I don't want to use $GLOBALS because it might cause some variable collision, and I didn't want to pass arguments because incase I decide to change the arguments in the parent function I'd have to do it in the child function aswell. I set the variable $pag_array to a global inside the function pagination_start(). It usually works when I DON'T wrap a function around this chunk of code, but if I do wrap a function around everything then the global suddenly won't work anymore. If i have $this->includer(...) or parent::includer(...), it doesn't work. why? Hi guys, I am trying something fairly simple but I'm not sure if this would be a good practice. Basically I am using a big class called CommonLibrary that holds common functions as methods and common variables as static variables. But I have some variables here and there like $allAlphabet = range ('a' , 'z'), that cannot be declared as a property because it gives me a parse error. I don't want to call an object for this class because instancing it is of no use. Values will never change with regards to instances. So the next best thing that I tried was declaring all static variables first, and then changing thei property values inside the class __construct with self::$variable = 'somevalue', and then using this code below to assign values to the empty static variables. $dummyObject = new CommonLibrary; unset($dummyObject); echo CommonLibrary::$staticVariable; // This property is NULL before the constructer is triggered. The second page code returns this error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING When I execute print_r, the values are returned to me. So I have two questions: 1) What do I need to do to change the code on the 2nd page to echo and POST the array? 2)The database contains multiple exercises under the same name. So, when the variables are passed to the 2nd page. All the values are returned regardless of whether they have been filled out or not. What can be done to only returned the user input and not the blank variables? I dont know why I'm having so many problems with this. I need to get a variable that defined in an included file inside of a function I've got this Inside file.php I've got the $variable1 and $variable2 defined (they're dynamic/different to each user) include('file.php'); function foo() { GLOBAL $variable1, $variable2; echo $variable1; echo $variable2; } foo(); Yet it outputs nothing? If I Include file.php right inside of the function it works however. Any idea? |
