PHP - Header Error ... I Have Read The Post At The Top Already
hi there, seems like I'm getting a fairly common beginners php error but as I'm using a number of differant files and as I'm not entirley clear on
a couple of things I thought I'd tap into the immense php talent on this site here's the error - Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\Epointment\index.php:4) in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\Epointment\ot\views\header.php on line 38 I have an index page that allows a user to log on, the processing go's away and checks the usual stuff then reloads the login page with the user detail or just reloads the login page with the user/password fields blank. I also have a development version of my site on my laptop, localhost. At the moment, I have identical code on both the development and production sites. I'm getting some header error in production, but not on development. Is it guaranteed that my page is generating some white space, or is it possible that there may be another issue at hand (I'm fairly non-technical, so I'm grasping here - my web host upgraded to a different PHP version that is creating whitespace in production while development on my laptop is a different version of php, my web host has done something else that is causing this, fill in the blank with your own conspiracy theory)? Hello together, I'm still relatively new with PHP and I'm encountering an error with the error code (Warning: Undefined array key "title" in I:\xampp\htdocs\test\Datenspeichern.php on line 13 to 17.). Normally I wanted that when I enter the data in the fields from the CD_Website page, that it is inserted in my created database and displayed in the table on the page. Hi, I am fairly new to PHP and I have built a page which accepts values from dynamically added rows so there is a combination of HTML,Javascript and PHP in the process. Now comes the problematic part PHP section( I love PHP ) I have to insert the column values into mysql and i will do this using a for loop within which I will have my insert statement INSERT INTO test values($txtRow) Lets say I added 4 rows dynamically with values held in $txtRow1,$txtRow2,$txtRow3,$txtRow4(See the java script section) how would I use these values in my PHP insert statement as I don't want to write 4 different insert scripts and the following "$txtRow.i" won't work for ($i = 1; $i <= 10; $i++) { INSERT INTO test values($txtRow.i) } Any suggestions are welcome...If you think you still need to see the whole code i can post it too. Jay i've seen this error pop up time and time again, and the answer is ALWAYS the same. please look here before you post it. the problem is you are outputting to the browser (whitespace included) before sending a header. this is unallowed. remove output prior to the header, or use OUTPUT BUFFERING. NEW EDIT TO THIS TOPIC: what usually results in these errors is poor script design. when one processes a form, they should do it BEFORE OUTPUTTING ANYTHING TO THE BROWSER. there is NO reason that the process cannot be operated in the header of the document, before any HTML is output. let's take a common example. the programmer wants a login form which checks the username and password against the database. if they don't match, then don't set a cookie remembering them and tell them it failed. if they do match, set the cookie and send them to a member page. many will do: [HTML starting the page and layout] [PHP processing the form] [form code] because they can simply echo any errors straight from PHP right above that form. they can also send a success message, set the cookie, and header() them off on their merry way without seeing the form again. it's a logical place to put this code. think again. you'll (perhaps not so) obviously get header errors when you go to use setcookie() and header(). if the login fails, it's dandy, but if you have a successful login the user gets nowhere. answer: put the processing in the header, and store the results in variables. perhaps a $result variable that is 1 if successful, 0 if failed. then $output that contains either a success message or customized error messages. the new code would look like: [PHP processing the form (if it was sent) and storing the results] [HTML starting the page and layout] [PHP echoing the results] [form code if failed - exit(); if successful] this will solve your header errors and will make for much more maintainable and readable code. if you want to redirect them elegantly (with a success message), use a <meta> refresh redirect. header() should only be used in instances where instant redirection is desired. I have been staring at my whiteboard pondering a new architecture for processing data in an application. New for me anyways. I want to create a more centralized and modular method of handling data. For ease of explanation I will put it into the context of a login system which is where I first started thinking about this. I know there are a lot of login systems out there but I wanted to create one from scratch which utilizes PDO although that specific thing is not germane to my main question. Here we go... Lets say that for my Registration, Login and Forgot Password pages the forms on each page were directed to "Process.php" The idea is that process.php will provide the centralized platform to deal with data, acting as a choke point in the application making it easier to secure. This will also provide the means to quickly develop new parts of an application knowing that my methods of dealing with data area already well defined and secure. There is one hole in the idea that I can see though. If the user data being submitted to the process.php page does not meet the security requirements then the user must be sent back to the previous page. I dont' want to lose the data they have already entered into the forms. ie. I want to have it appear in the form fields... makes sense right. Now here comes my question... is there a way to pass POST data when using header("location: http://mySite/previousPage.php") It seems from my experiments that the data is lost. I do not use header(); often. In previous designs I have usually created each part of a login system as seperate and self contained entities apart from using a common db object. I know there are other ways around this, using session data for instance but this idea has been eating away at me for a little while and I feel its time to ask around for some advice. It has become a matter of curiosity. I have found some info on sending POST data using header but it did not seem to meet the requirement that the user and the POST data be sent to another page synchronously. At first I thought that maybe I would just do validation on the frontend / view pages (not to be taken as clientside) and if it was valid, then submit it to process.php, validate it again the let it be handled appropriately to its particular end but then I run into the same problem plus there is the extra overhead of validating the data twice. I guess thats it for now. Sorry if that was a little long-winded... its part of my process, helps me to better understand what I really want to know.
