PHP - If !$variable Nested In Function Always Reads Null?

I am trying to implement a Pagination class for a website displaying movies. I need to have the total number of posts, but on accessing the function row_count() from class Connection I get the error: "Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to a member function query() on null in ..\connection.php:30 Stack trace: #0 from ...\index.php(20): Connection->row_count() #1 ..."

I only found two posts concerning this issue, and they led me to think this might be a scope issue with $db variable; $db is defined in the constructor function of the same Connection class so I thought the scope would be ok; but apparently, not.

Can anybody help? This is a real show-stopper just now. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Making pdo a global variable would probably fix it, but from what I heard globals are frowned upon.

I have the following code which works fine:

however, when i use my dbconn.php as an include rather than the top section of this code, i get the following error: function prepare() on null

The error references the following

$stmt = $mysqli->prepare($sql);

In my database connection file, i am using the following:

$conn = mysqli_connect($db_servername, $db_username, $db_password, $db_name);

This seems to be the issue and i believe i am mixing procedural and object based but not sure why there should be a difference here?

when i used my database connection file, i do change $mysqli->prepare to $conn->prepare

Hi, first post here.  I'm wanting to create a php script which will call itself in a recursive function so that nested comments are made ..

An example of a perfect hierarchy would be as bellow...

Note how they go deep into the comment replies (should support 7-25 comments in comments/deep) At the moment it only goes three deep as the recursive function doesn't  work...

I have created the function, but for some reason the line "comment($row['id']);" in the recursive function isn't preforming anything, commented or un commented. However looks fine to me.

It works great as:

echo(gimme("name"));

Then I realized that I could use that as a variable ('$name' in this case) elsewhere. However, I can't figure out how get that new, variable variable 'outside' of the function.  As such,

echo($name);

isn't working outside the function.  Is there a way to return a variable variable?  In other words, is there a way to make a function that creates a variable variable that will available outside of the function?

Hi, I need code that reads from the roles database and then selects which file from these 3 which I want. For example, the user.php file would be loaded if the user has UName = user, Pass = 124, and Roles = User added to the database. But the admin.php and boss.php files would not appear to him.
Then only the user who would have it like UName = admin Pass = 125 and Roles = Admin would see the admin.php file, but he would not see the user.php and boss.php files. And of course the boss.php file would be seen by a user with UName = boss, Pass = 126 and Roles = Boss.
Please use only PDO!
I need to write this in this code somehow.
