PHP - How Can You Estimate The Number Of Users A Server Can Support?
These are the specs that come to mind, CPU, RAM, Storage, Bandwith
My question is this, once you know what the point of a website is, whether it is to host videos, design something with an editor, ecommerce, if I ask a costumer "How many people do you expect to be on your site?"
Is that a fair question? Or is that arbitrary or even rhetorical like "Duh... the maximum count"
I want to know based on what is being accessed whether it is the photos displayed on page, character count, flash / javascript, whatever... how can I estimate?
This is for assigning VPS's depending on the clients requirement

I am trying to work out how many regular users I have to my site and how long those users tend to be users..
So, I have a table that logs every time a user visits my site and logs in, it stores the date / time as a unix timestamp and it logs their user id.
I started by getting the id's of any user who logs in more than 5 times in a specified period, but now I want to extend that...
SELECT userID as user, count(userID) as logins FROM login_history where timestamp > UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2014-06-01 00:00:00') and timestamp < UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2014-07-01 00:00:00') group by user having logins > 5; My server is Linux/Apache/PHP.
When a file is uploaded, I use PHP's finfo_open to confirm that the file have the correct file extension matches and delete them if it doesn't match. I also which file mimi types and size could be uploaded.
Things I do with the files include:
Upload user's files and store them in some public directory (/var/www/html/users_public_directory/), and allow other users to directly download them.
Upload user's files and store them in some private directory (/var/www/users_private_directory/), and allow other users to download them using X-Sendfile.
Upload user's ZIP files and convert them to PDF files (unzip the ZIP file, and uses Libreoffice and Imagemagick's convert to convert them to PDFs).
From the server's prospective, what are the risks of allowing users to upload files? Are there some file types which are more dangerous to the server? Could they be executed on the server, and if so, how could this be prevented?
I recently wrote a web app made with flash that communicates with php scripts on my web server(apache2). Like most others, I believe my web app is the end all be all and could potentially attract millions of users Ok, long story short, in the long haul, there will be people using robots to communicate with my php scripts to do tasks that are in the game in order to cheat. I'd like to limit these users from hammering the server with robotic requests. I no for a fact that no human will make requests to my game more than once per two seconds or so. So is it best for me to somehow do this type of code with php? or maybe at the apache level somehow? My flash application can detect http error status codes for each request so if any solution would cause a non standard 200, that is fine, i should be able to detect the code, and wait a couple seconds on the flash client, then do a retry hopefully I'm lost on this one and would appreciate some help I don't have a lot of money and I'm launching a high traffic website, I intend to have a payment system linked to hosting service I am using so that in the event that my website is actually successful, it can expand accordingly.
I want to know ahead of time about bandwith usage, I have a 3TB limit per month which may seem like a lot but what if thousands of users are accessing/using files that are between 2 to 10 MB each? Uploading, viewing, scrolling, text...
This calculation also applies to storage
I haven't really given this much thought, I'm just curious, I have a lot to do and I would like to start amassing information ahead of time
Thank you for any help
Hi there, I'm writing an application that pulls from two separate web based APIs, collates the data into a single array of data. Once done, it then enters a loop that cycles through the array and executes a cURL call for each cycle. This worked perfectly for a controlled set of 10 artificial records and so I've started testing with live data. On running the code, I eventually the following : Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. I'm not sure how to debug this and so I'm hoping I can find some help here. I'm running WAMP, and the php.ini contains the following: max_execution_time = 0 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds max_input_time = 0 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data Through testing, I have discovered the following : The script can do exactly 35 iterations through the loop in under 2 minutes. Any number greater than this causes the error. If I skip the first 20 curl submits, I can then do 21 to 55 iterations before failure, so I do not believe it is the 36th value. If I put a sleep(5) command into the loop, I can still do 35 and no more iterations than that. If I put a sleep(10) command into the loop, it fails on 35 and needs less. Code: [Select] $action = "post"; $url = "http://url.url.url/api/v1.0/udo_Position/create"; // I've replaced the actual URL out of necessity // set user agent { print("Setting CURL options, using URL ".$url."<br>"); $cd = curl_init(); curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_HEADER, 1); curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_USERPWD, 'username:password'); curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); // Don't send return value to screen curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, "Firefox/2.0.0.1"); // spoofing FireFox 2.0 curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_VERBOSE, true); // } if ($action == 'get') { ; } elseif ($action == 'post') { print("POST set;<br>"); print("<pre style='font-family:verdana;font-size:13'>"); print_r($pointval); print("</pre>"); $pointval["save"] = "Save"; // The AddNew step form requires this. curl_setopt($cd, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $pointval); } else { print("Invalid usage. Please see example<br>"); return; } $reply = curl_exec($cd); $http_status = curl_getinfo($cd, CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE); print("<pre style='font-family:verdana;font-size:13'>"); print_r($http_status); print("</pre>"); print("Here is the reply from the AddNew function: <br>"); print("<pre style='font-family:verdana;font-size:13'>"); print_r($reply); print("</pre>"); if (curl_error($cd)) { print("Error: ".(curl_error($cd))."<br>"); } curl_close($cd); print("Insert Successful.<br>"); I am uncertain whether it is a PHP, Apache or cURL issue at this point. I have another script that pushes a great deal more cURL calls to the same system but pulls from only one external resource, instead of two. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I need to know if there is any standard to estimate the effort to create a page in Java vs PHP.
For example, if we need to build a login page. I understand there are many factors but trying to see if there is any standards to compare these 2 technology in terms of effort
I'm looking at shared hosting provided by GoDaddy. On the shared hosting they offer, entry process limitations range from 100 to 125.
I was also told this by customer support:
Entry Processes are the number of connections your account can process simultaneously. Understanding what constitutes a connection is important, though, because it's not as straightforward as "the number of visitors on your website." Here's what constitutes as a connection: Your website delivering data via HTTP Your hosting account transferring data via SSH A Cron job processing However, the connections are only counted while they're processing. As soon as they've finished, they no longer count as processes. For an example, if a visitor comes to your site and your home page takes .1 seconds to load and generates only one HTTP connection, that visitor counted as one process for .1 seconds. Even though that visitor is still "viewing your site," they no longer count as a connection until they do something else that generates another connection, like move to a new page. So what is an average user count that I can conclude? I don't want to think that "it's not possible" I just need to know what limitations I'm looking at. I'm also curious what kind of error would be generated if more than 100 or 125 people tried to access the server simulataneously. Or perhaps employ an access delay of some sort. Edited by moose-en-a-gant, 10 January 2015 - 09:59 PM. I'm getting the dreaded " Invalid parameter number: number of bound variables does not match number of tokens" error and I've looked at this for days. Here is what my table looks like:
| id | int(4) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | user_id | int(4) | NO | | NULL | | | recipient | varchar(30) | NO | | NULL | | | subject | varchar(25) | YES | | NULL | | | cc_email | varchar(30) | YES | | NULL | | | reply | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | | location | varchar(50) | YES | | NULL | | | stationery | varchar(40) | YES | | NULL | | | ink_color | varchar(12) | YES | | NULL | | | fontchosen | varchar(30) | YES | | NULL | | | message | varchar(500) | NO | | NULL | | | attachment | varchar(40) | YES | | NULL | | | messageDate | datetime | YES | | NULL |Here are my params: $params = array( ':user_id' => $userid, ':recipient' => $this->message_vars['recipient'], ':subject' => $this->message_vars['subject'], ':cc_email' => $this->message_vars['cc_email'], ':reply' => $this->message_vars['reply'], ':location' => $this->message_vars['location'], ':stationery' => $this->message_vars['stationery'], ':ink_color' => $this->message_vars['ink_color'], ':fontchosen' => $this->message_vars['fontchosen'], ':message' => $messageInput, ':attachment' => $this->message_vars['attachment'], ':messageDate' => $date );Here is my sql: $sql = "INSERT INTO messages (user_id,recipient, subject, cc_email, reply, location,stationery, ink_color, fontchosen, message,attachment) VALUES( $userid, :recipient, :subject, :cc_email, :reply, :location, :stationery, :ink_color, :fontchosen, $messageInput, :attachment, $date);"; And lastly, here is how I am calling it: $dbh = parent::$dbh; $dbh->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_WARNING); if (empty($dbh)) return false; $stmt = $dbh->prepare($sql); $stmt->execute($params) or die(print_r($stmt->errorInfo(), true)); if (!$stmt) { print_r($dbh->errorInfo()); }I know my userid is valid and and the date is set above (I've echo'd these out to make sure). Since the id is auto_increment, I do not put that in my sql (though I've tried that too), nor in my params (tried that too). What am I missing? I feel certain it is something small, but I have spent days checking commas, semi-colons and spelling. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? I just discovered that I have a major security flaw with my website. Anyone who logs in to the website can easily access other users information as well as delete and edit other users information just by changing the ID variable in the address bar. I have user ID Session started on these pages but still people can do anything they like with other users information just by editing the address bar. For example if your logged in in the address bar of www.mywebsite.com/delete_mystuff.php?id=5 and change the "5" say to a "9" then you will have access to user#9 information. Every important page that I have has this code: Code: [Select] session_start(); if (!isset($_SESSION['user_id'])) { // Start defining the URL. $url = 'http://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . dirname($_SERVER['PHP_SELF']); // Check for a trailing slash. if ((substr($url, -1) == '/') OR (substr($url, -1) == '\\') ) { $url = substr ($url, 0, -1); // Chop off the slash. } // Add the page. $url .= '/index.php'; ob_end_clean(); // Delete the buffer. header("Location: $url"); exit(); // Quit the script. } else { //Else If Logged In Run The Script if((isset($_GET['id'])) && (is_numeric($_GET['id']))) { $id = (int) $_GET['id']; } elseif ((isset($_POST['id'])) && (is_numeric($_POST['id']))) { $id = (int) $_POST['id']; } else { echo ' No valid ID found, passed in url or form element'; exit(); } What am I doing wrong? Please help if you know how to correct this. Many thanks in advance. Hello,
I have problem durring binding update query. I can't find what is causing problem.

Edited by danchi, 17 October 2014 - 10:25 AM. I need to display a number(the number is retrieved from the db) in the form input field such that only the last 4 digits is visbile, the remaining can be masked as * or X or whatever is applicable. I know the last 4 can be obtained as follows: Code: [Select] $number=substr($number,-4,4); But when i hit the submit button the form validates the input field and checks if the number is a valid number of a specific format. Therefore when I click on the submit button then I should still be able to unmask the masked numbers or do something similar that would help me validate the whole number. Code: [Select] <input type="text" name="no" value="<?php if(!empty($number)){ echo $number;} ?>"> I have a PHP web system that store in a windows server. In the system, there is a function for user to upload files to another server (Shared server in Unix). When i try to upload a file, it gives warning: Warning: move_uploaded_file(\\unixserver/sharedfolder/upload/test.txt) [function.move-uploaded-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in C:\wamp\www\upload\index.php on line 40 For your information, my username has been assigned in xxx's group that has access to read and write on that folder. Besides, i'm able to open, create and delete files on that folder's server manually (samba). The safe mode setting is off. Does anybody has any idea why this thing happen? I'm trying to make a simple website where people register to my website. When the user doesn't fill anything inside the boxes they get a message "Please fill all required fields" on the register.php page On my local host require_once works good. It shows up.
But when i upload the files to my sever the require_once does not show up on the register.php It just refreshes and i dont get the message "Please fill all required fields"
This is the code that works in local host but not in a live server <?php require_once 'messages.php'; ?>

I have spent many hours on this. Regards Hi folks, I'm curious if I can for example, save a file from my server and it will save to all other servers - obviously if they accepted the connection first. It's for a software I developed and is almost complete and know there will be frequent updates to it. Instead of users downloading upates, I want the update files from my server to somehow synchronize to their server automatically? Anything called this?? Thanks for info. This isn't exactly an application design question, but rather a system design one.
I am about to install an Inventory Control System inside this store I work in.
The store itself also owns a Linode VPS running Centos 6.4 which hosts our website.
This new Inventory System will come built in with a Microsoft SQL Server, and supposedly it is a SQL Anywhere database, but I'm not too sure what that means.
I need to make this database publicly accessible, but only via the Linode VPS. Surely, setting restrictions is easy enough to address that issue. That isn't my question.
My first idea is to put this server into the DMZ, easy. But it doesn't exactly sound safe. So my next idea was to put a middleman server in the DMZ, this way the Linode can send queries to that middleman server and it will send that data to the SQL Server and back. This is very vaguely described I know, but I don't want to get too much into details, but rather, understand how I can create that middleman server, and what could Install onto it that would allow me to securely process queries?
My first thought was to install a webservice, that accepts an XML/JSON request and returns an XML/JSON response.
Then, I realized directly afterwards that I don't have any experience setting up a webservice like that.
What kind of options are there out there? Ultimately, my question is, should I just put the Server in the DMZ or should I create the middleman, and if so, can someone point me in the right direction as to getting a webservice set up?
