PHP - How Does One Refer To Empty Cells In Mysql?

Logically, one would think that nothing or NULL gets inserted to that field since the MySQL structure rule states that default is NULL, and since nothing is fed to it in the query, I think that it would automatically be NULL since if the column is omitted, that is exactly the value that will be inserted. Enclosing the variable with quotes is not preferable since this field accepts integers. Also, converting the variable to an integer by (int)$number results in a 0, which is not what I want either. Checking if the variable is empty of not, and if it is, assign $number = "''" so that the query would succeed by enclosing the empty string with single quotes. But this creates a lot of unnecessary code (some of my tables are 80 columns wide and the query therefore have equal amount of variables). So to summarise, why is this happening and how do I neatly avoid assigning quotes to the empty strings? "', image = 'no_image.jpg'"); } } } This part of the code adds a jpg at the end of the product_image additional images so in my csv the 10 columns which have additional numbers for example in my csv it has: say 00532 so this code adds 00532.jpg once imported the the next part which is the else statement no_image.jpg adds a no_image.jpg but instead of it inserting a no_image.jpg for all the blank cells i would like it to SKIP the blank cells for the additional images which is product_image so if no number in the cell it SKIPS it. but have no clue how to do it. I understand isset($var) and why I should use it sometimes to avoid undefined messages. But with empty() it makes more sense to always test the variable directly because if the value is NULL, 0, '', or false then it evaluates as TRUE. Is there any situation where empty should be used always? I have search page in the form of search.php?q=query, as the php script calls for other files and a long process. When visiting search.php directly, the value of q is indeed null, and it makes a long loop and use lots of cpu.
