PHP - Php Websocket - How I Can Create Chat Room(s) And Subscribe User To Specific Chat Room?

I've been trying to think of the best way to build a PHP based chat room. Obviously a push method would work the greatest but I have been unable to find any such techniques using PHP so this is the only alternative I can think of.

When a user logs in to the chat, a file is created in a secure directory on the server for the user. This file will store messages to be sent to the user. Each time someone sends a message to the chat, the message is inserted into every user's file. Then, using AJAX, the user in chat will "reload" the chat every few seconds, which will simply access a PHP script that reads the file, sends it to the user, then truncates the file contents to zero.

My concern is obviously the high frequency of server loads to access the chat file, but this is why I would try to minimize the server's effort for retrieving chat content and focus the efforts more on sending messages since this action is done less often.

I'm looking for suggestions on what would be best to keep the system efficient... maybe some ideas of headers to send which may help with optimization. Thank you for your time.

Twitter chat features :
1) use ajax to reload the page to get new data from database for every 10 seconds,
2) When the user scroll down to the bottom of page, it load the older 5 data from database.

I have 3 files (index.php, message1.php and message2.php)
On index.php,
I use ajax to reload the page for every 10 seconds to call a php file (message1.php).

On message1.php,
I use mysql to retrieve 30 records from database and php to display the records to the index.php. ($last_msg_id to hold the id of last data in message1.php, then send the $last_msg_id to index.php)

When user scroll down to bottom of the page, it will auto call other php file (message2.php) to display older 5 records from database. (index.php will send $last_msg_id_id to message2.php, so that message2.php will know which was the last data previously and display the older data where id is less than $last_msg_id, eg : $query2 = "SELECT id, message, datetime FROM messages WHERE id < '$last_msg_id'  LIMIT 5";

Now my problem is when the ajax reload the index.php, the value of $last_msg_id is become empty. So if the user is on the half way scrolling to bottom of page to get older data, the older data will not show up, it will show up the previous data because the value of $last_msg_id is back to empty after page is reloaded by ajax.

May I know how to fix this problem please? Maybe I should not reload the page for every 10 seconds to get new data? If without reload the page, how am I going to get new data when his friends posted new messages on other side?

If I query my database: www.mydomain.com/index.php?room=M210   I get both room M201 and M210B in my results.   I know enough to know that is a result of:

   and (allstate_schedule.room LIKE '$room%')

So I change it to this:

   and (allstate_schedule.room LIKE '$room')

Now the query works correctly: www.mydomain.com/index.php?room=M210   But if I pull up an unfiltered list: www.mydomain.com/index.php   ... I get my "No records found matching:"   here is my code:

Hello there,

I have a problem with this project I'm working on, everything is working fine except for one last thing.
it goes as you go to the website, search for a city, choose a hotel from a list in that city, then book a room in that hotel, go to confirmation page then to paypal.
everything is fine except after the booking when you go to the confirmation page, it shows correctly the number of nights you booked and everything, all except the rooms, it shows 0 rooms selected, and it doesn't give any price at all.
