PHP - How To Design An Application When It Comes To Unit Of Measurement Conversions
Let's say there is an application where a user would like to use English and Metric systems to enter values. For example, to handle customer orders where customers give data in this or that system, (but not both).
From the user-view, all the user cares about is if they can select English or Metric system, enter their values, click submit, and have their data added to the page in their choice of system, and have their values (and choice of system) stay the same.
The back end however is set up to do "compute" operations with English system in mind only. So inside back end, before the compute module, all the values should be converted to English. Some things like precomputed constants, that exist in computations are in English unit of measurements.
So I have attached an image of what I am thinking ..
* first (top) way is one where the front-end takes care of conversions. Back-end is not aware of another system (which makes it difficult sometimes, when trying to display a page back to the user saying "We know you chose system X"), and being aware of chosen system is something that I think is beneficial.
* the second (bottom) way is where front end is merely a passing device to back end, and bac-end takes care of conversions. Back-end is also aware of the two systems
My question is -- is there a preferred way to design an application when it comes to considerations above? Have a system-aware back-end, or try to localize system to front end only?

Similar TutorialsThis is my code for displaying images from a folder:
function generate_img ($imagepointer, $imageornot){ if($imageornot == 1){ $var = getcwd(); $dirlocation = $var."\\imageuploads\\".$imagepointer; $files = array_diff(scandir($dirlocation), array('..', '.')); foreach ($files as $image){ $data[] = array('label' => '
'); }; return $data; } else { return FALSE; } } I'm using it with print_r:
<?php print_r(generate_img($imagepointer, $imageornot)); ?>
Working ok, but obviously not good for a live site. Is implode() a good idea in this situation? And how would I use it? Appreciated. I have a script that takes a 2 or 3 page pdf, uploads it and hashes the file name to something that isn't guessable. We now want to add an image of each of the PDF for users who don't have Adobe Reader. Some pdf's will be 2 and some 3 pages. Should I: A) Let convert name the different pages "*-0.jpg, *-1.jpg..." and then use a recursion function (it's already written for another reason) to crawl the folder, B) Use a PHP/PDF library to determine the number of pages, then add the value to the database's corresponding row. C) Use a hybrid of both D) Any better ideas??? Thanks Hi, I need a small help. Here is my situation. I am using a MVC application (e.g. Joomla or Drupal) which has a .htaccess redirect rule that all requests are passed through index.php file. That's normal and this is my main application. Now I installed another application within the application folder structure. What I want do do here is to allow opening the third party application URLs after one logged into my main application. Can anybody provide me some pointers to do the same? Please let me know if you need any further information on this. Any solution irrespective of framework will work. Thanks! Anupam Hi, I have a class XMLtool where one of the functions is to output a parameter-passed dom document and then output to the browser screen, so basically: function outputXML($domDocument) { if has attributes print cur nodes attributes for each child, if child is element node outputXML(cur node) else if child is text print text end for each } Please I am not sure what type of unit tests I can perform. I'd appreciate all the help! Just wanted some general advice/guidance, I know there are plenty of articles and tutorials online about unit testing, but I just wanted to get a first hand perspective off of some of you guys... What are some real world examples of actual PHP Unit Testing? Also any unit testing frameworks you can recommend? Apologies if this has been covered before.
I need to create the unique SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) name for each products mixed with i.e.: SKU for a product with
id=13, becomes : BI-IKHA0013 This is how I tried: $inm = "Bio Clean green500ml"; $cnm = "INSECTS KILLERS"; $bnm = "HARPIC "; echo SKU_gen($inm, $cnm,$bnm,20).'
'; function SKU_gen($pname, $cat=null, $brand=null, $id = null, $l = 2){ $results = ''; // empty string $str1 = array_shift(explode(' ',$pname)); $str1 = strtoupper(substr($str1, 0, $l)); $str2 = array_shift(explode(' ',$cat)); $str2 = strtoupper(substr($str2, 0, $l)); $str3 = array_shift(explode(' ',$brand)); $str3 = strtoupper(substr($str3, 0, $l)); $id = str_pad($id , 4, 0, STR_PAD_LEFT); $results .= "{$str1}-{$str2}{$str3}{$id}"; return $results; } But this function is not working as expected when category of brand values become NULL. I’ve got a colleague who was brought in as a testing specialist to help improve code quality and reduce bugs. I’ve done a little testing before, but am no means an expert. When they joined I was really excited to learn from them as testing is definitely an area I lack experience. He’s got good coverage and he writes tests for literally everything he does, but it’s something like 95% mocks as opposed to what I would call “black box” testing; testing the input and output. Does that sound reasonable? As I say, I’m not an expert, but his testing strategy doesn’t seem particularly effective and it puts constraints over exactly how code is implemented rather than testing that things behave correctly. I must confess, I've not really done much unit testing at all in the last 3 years. Can anyone give me an idea of what they would test and why that would be faster or more efficient than running the code as a user? One area I can see it having huge benefits is when I'm testing methods which interact with a database, like user registration, which I would probably test by registering several times - fixing any bugs, making amendments and repeating. Ok, so I kinda sold the idea to myself there But, what about for small applications? I've seen people testing whether a variable is countable...why would I not just check the output immediately? Appreciate any advice. pls help me.. i am new to PHP unit testing concept. i just wrote a PHP unit test case for a login module in ZEND frame work. for that we have to see the result via command promt. but in some places of zend frame work we are using '$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']' to get server host name but it can get only by hitting via browser so while am hitting via command promt it will give error message lik this(given below) Generating code coverage report, this may take a moment.PHP Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_HOST in /opt/coolstack/apache2/htdocs/LPS/application/bootstrap/Bootstrap.php on line 147 Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_HOST in /opt/coolstack/apache2/htdocs/LPS/application/bootstrap/Bootstrap.php on line 147 PHP Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_HOST in /opt/coolstack/apache2/htdocs/LPS/application/bootstrap/Bootstrap.php on line 197 Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_HOST in /opt/coolstack/apache2/htdocs/LPS/application/bootstrap/Bootstrap.php on line 197 PHP Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_HOST in /opt/coolstack/apache2/htdocs/LPS/library/Zaah/Controller/Plugin/Ssl.php on line 79 Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_HOST in /opt/coolstack/apache2/htdocs/LPS/library/Zaah/Controller/Plugin/Ssl.php on line 79 i cant give server host name at all the places. so please help me how to solve this problem.... thanks Yogesh Hi, I need to develop a module called chat with doctor. User can able to chat with the doctor for that he has to pay some amount to website. Say example user got purchase the Package worth : 2$ =>5min. After 5 min chat will be closed , timer should be shown while chatting. How can we do this? I am building program to manage payment/monthly payments. I've ran into an issue that I haven't been able to overcome and need some help. I've been lurking for a while and decided it was time to ask you guys...Here's the issue: I have a table 'payments' that contains scheduled payments that looks like: id clientid paymentduedate balance expected pending 367 112233 4/16/2011 1030.00 257.50 Y 368 112233 5/16/2011 1030.00 257.50 Y 369 112233 6/16/2011 1030.00 257.50 Y 370 112233 7/16/2011 1030.00 257.50 Y What I need to do that I haven't figured out is to adjust the expected amount according to the payment, update the status to N (not pending) without affecting the later expected payments. For example: they make a payment of $257.50, applies that to row 367, sets the status to N, but leaves the other status' to Y (for obvious reasons). the make a payment of $250.00, leaving the balance at $7.50, so lets add $7.50 to row 368, mark 367 status to N the make a payment of $300.00, leaving the expected balance at $0.00 for row 367, but adjust the balance for row 368 to $215.00 Any ideas? One is to read ten chapters a day, one chapter from each of the bookmarks. Type in what day you are on and the program will show you on each of the lists as to what chapter you are suppose to be on. Also want to show statistics that will display how many times the Bible has been read with a break down of all 66 books of the Bible. Exciting opportunity for someone wanting to get a foot in the door in the world of IT!!
Hi all, this is my first time on this forum! I have a background with HTML and CSS but have recently started a Masters in Computer Science hoping to come out of it with the tools to get a job with PHP development. Our first assignment has somewhat 'thrown me in the deep end' as we have to construct a search engine that indexes the words of a number of documents and rank them using the TF*IDF algorithm along with the log rule associated with Information retrieval. I am completely new to PHP so the past week has been something of a crash course - This is the code I have so far: Code: [Select] <?php $filename = 'airlines.txt'; $fp = fopen( $filename, 'r' ); $file_contents = fread( $fp, filesize( $filename ) ); fclose( $fp ); //$new_contents = ereg_replace("[^A-Za-z0-9]", "", $file_contents); /*$file_contents = trim($file_contents); $file_contents = preg_replace('/\h+/', ' ', $file_contents); $file_contents = preg_replace('/\v{3,}/', PHP_EOL.PHP_EOL, $file_contents); */ $pat[0] = "/^\s+/"; $pat[1] = "/\s{2,}/"; $pat[2] = "/\s+\$/"; $rep[0] = ""; $rep[1] = " "; $rep[2] = ""; $new_contents = preg_replace("/[^A-Za-z0-9\s\s+]/","",$file_contents); $new_contents = preg_replace($pat,$rep,$new_contents); //preg_replace('~\s{2,}~', ' ', $text); $commonWords = array('a','able','about','above'........and another few hundreds cut out of this not to hurt your eyes!); $lines = explode ( "\n", $new_contents); $lines2 = implode (" ", $lines); $words = explode ( " ", $lines2 ); $useful_words = array_diff( $words, $commonWords ); /*for($i = 0; $i < count($lines); $i++) { echo "Piece $i = $lines[$i]
"; }*/ for($i = 0; $i < count($useful_words); $i++) { echo "Words $i = $useful_words[$i]
"; } //$arr=array("blah1","blah2","blah3"); file_put_contents("demo2.txt",implode(" ",$useful_words)); //$file_c = file_get_contents("demo.txt"); //$colms = explode(",",trim($file_c)); //print_r($colms); //echo $lines[2]; ?> I've got to the stage where that strips out most of the stop words when the final array is printed, but they have been replaced with spaces or something that I have not come acoss because as you may see I had a bit of trouble originally stripping the punctuation marks. I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction as to how to organise the words I have left after the stripping of stop words which are of no use during the search. I need to store those words into another array and index them which says how many times they appear in that document. I've come across the function array array_count_values ( array $input ) on the manual but I'm not sure about the best way to use it. I've attached the files I've used if that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Hi, I'm working on a project which was going pretty well until I discovered the application doesn't actually know where it is installed. So far when I want to include the config file I just use $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/config.php';() Which works fine if the application is installed in the root directory. But how do I get the folder the application is installed in? e.g. Document Root Folder: C:\Web\ Actually Application Folder: C:\Web\MyApp\ How do I get the \MyApp dynamically? I can't just use './' all the time because I have files accessed by AJAX stored in other folders. Thanks in advance. Would it be possible to create a passive socket server using php, for a client-server php app, that runs as some sort of daemon? I understand that you probably can't understand much of what I mean, but I hope you understand enough to help me in some way. PHP APPLICATION - > APPLICATION SERVER - > DATABASE(S) Explanation: Each instance of the PHP application would connect to the "Application Server" and use it to fetch information and perform some commands. Could this be done using sockets ? Simple examples would help Thank You! |
