Similar TutorialsMichael Feathers coined the term Legacy Code as being code without automated tests.
Still however Legacy Code evokes a vision in me that it is code that is ugly, old, runs on mainframes, and is probably 3000 lines long, uses globals and questionable code practices.
But say we take this ugly nasty code, and put it very nicely under test, but without doing any refactoring, other than that necessary to be able to put it under test in the first place.
Now that code is under test. But it it still ugly. How would you call ugly code under test?
Would you make a differentiation between old & ugly and modern & pretty code if both are under test?
I am a complete newbie. I have installed xampp. I created a database and the tables but that is all. I need to create all my relationships and test my database. to do this, do I now need to write the php code to view the results in a browser or... do I do it in MySQL. If so, Can someone just point me in the direction I need to go for my next step.
Thanks

I am trying to create a form which asks the user to input their postcode then submit. the purpose is so if the service my site offers is not available in the location that the end user lives, then I want to display a message saying 'Sorry, not available', but if they are in area then it redirects to another page.
My form code is:
<form method="post" action="forwarder.php"> <p> Enter Post Code He <input type = "text" name = "zip" id = "zip" size = "10" maxlength = "5" "> <input type='submit'> </form>My PHP is: <?php $zip = isset ($_POST['zip']) { if ($zip=='NG15') { header('Location: https://www.bing.com'); } else { header('Location: http://www.google.co.uk') } ?>I am a bit of a newbie at this, and I know my PHP won't give me my desired result, but I was using this to try and test the concept. Help would be really appreciated, and if you can show me how to do it for multiple postcodes even better Hi All Basically I have 4 fields in my database image2, image3, image4, image5 I have an image uploader to upload the files but I need what I need is if image2 is empty put in image3, if image3 is empty put in image4 so far I have this //so first is the query to find the right row which gives the variable $row //now here is what im doing if($row['image2']!==""){ //run this code } elseif($row['image3']!==""){ //run this code } elseif($row['image4']!==""){ //run this code } elseif($row['image5']!==""){ //run this code } Now the problem I'm having is the code that is always executing is the first one of $row['image2'] even if image2 has a value in the database it still runs that code and over writes the field in the database. It never moves on to field 3 or 4. Can someone please tell me if I've done something wrong. I'm not storing the image in the database just the name. Thanks Danny Below is the screenshots and script for user page level access i have used it for one of my old projects. Code is working as it was intended. But it needs to be improvised. Users table
pages table , which has all the pages and links
Access level table. which has user id from users table and page id from pages table (for which user has access)
Once the user is created, admin gives access to the user on page basis, the permissions.php page looks like this The modules
Menus inside the modules
Pages in each menu
Here is my code for permission.php <div id="demo2-html"> <ul id="demo2" class="mnav"> <li><a href="#">Sales</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Lead</a> <ul> <table class="table table-bordered table-striped table-hover"> <?php $s1 = mysqli_query($con, "SELECT pages.page_id as pid, pages.code, pages.page, pages.href, access_level.aid, access_level.page_id as pgid, access_level.user_id FROM pages LEFT JOIN access_level ON (pages.page_id=access_level.page_id AND access_level.user_id=".$user." ) WHERE pages.code='led'") or die(mysqli_error($con)); while($s2 = mysqli_fetch_array($s1)) { ?> <tr><li><td><?php echo $s2['page']; ?> </td><td><input type="checkbox" name="sn[]" value="<?php echo $s2['pid']; ?>" <?php if($s2['pgid'] === $s2['pid']) echo 'checked="checked"';?> /> <input type="hidden" value="<?php echo $s2['pid']; ?>" name="page_id[<?php echo $s2['pgid']; ?>]"> </td></li></tr> <?php } ?> </table> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">Customer</a> <ul> <table class="table table-bordered table-striped table-hover"> <?php $s1 = mysqli_query($con, "SELECT pages.page_id as pid, pages.code, pages.page, pages.href, access_level.aid, access_level.page_id as pgid, access_level.user_id FROM pages LEFT JOIN access_level ON (pages.page_id=access_level.page_id AND access_level.user_id=".$user." ) WHERE pages.code='cst'") or die(mysqli_error($con)); while($s2 = mysqli_fetch_array($s1)) { ?> <tr><li><td><?php echo $s2['page']; ?> </td><td><input type="checkbox" name="sn[]" value="<?php echo $s2['pid']; ?>" <?php if($s2['pgid'] === $s2['pid']) echo 'checked="checked"';?> /> <input type="hidden" value="<?php echo $s2['pid']; ?>" name="page_id[<?php echo $s2['pgid']; ?>]"> </td></li></tr> <?php } ?> </table> </ul> </li> //code goes for all the other modules </ul> </li> </ul> </div> <input type="hidden" name="user" value="<?php echo $user; ?>" /> <div class="row" align="center"> <input type="submit" name="submit" class="btn btn-success" value="Save" /> </form> // form Submission if(isset($_POST['submit'])) { $user = $_POST['user']; $sql = "DELETE FROM access_level WHERE user_id = ".$user.""; $query = mysqli_query($con, $sql) or die (mysqli_error($con)); foreach($_POST['sn'] as $sn) { $sql = "insert into access_level (page_id, user_id) values (".$sn.", ".$user.")"; $query = mysqli_query($con, $sql) or die (mysqli_error($con)); } if($query) { header("location:users.php?access=1"); } }
So against each user i am storing all the page ids here. When i edit any of the users, it deletes all the records and again insers new records. Which i feel is not a proper way to do. And in codewise also, i am redirecting the user to no_access.php (as below) page if the user do not have access. <?php ob_start(); include("connect.php"); include("admin_auth.php"); $q1 = basename($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'], '?' . $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']); $q2 = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; $var1 = "/".$q1; $qa_path=explode('/', $q2); $right_path = $qa_path[2].$var1; $parsedUrl = parse_url($q2); $curdir = dirname($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'])."/"; $m4 = "select p.page_id, p.code, p.page, p.href, al.aid, al.page_id, al.user_id FROM pages p INNER JOIN access_level al ON p.page_id=al.page_id WHERE al.user_id=".$_SESSION['user_id'].""; $m5 = mysqli_query($con, $m4) or die (mysqli_error($con)); while($nk1 = mysqli_fetch_array($m5)) { $href1[] = ($nk1['href']); } if(in_array($right_path, $href1)) { echo "<script type='text/javascript'> document.location = ".BASE_URL."/".$right_path."</script>"; } else { echo "<script type='text/javascript'> document.location = '../no_access.php' </script>"; exit(); } ?> I need help in improve and better/effective (structural) way to do this both in database and php script. I'm working on a project that has a lot of different timezone options, and all I have from the users is their UTC offset. After weeks of doing tweaks, I come to new issues every time I add something, one would think it would be a lot easier to just get the correct time and day :) The latest issue is that when I try to rewrite a date to a better fomat, it disregards the GMT offset. Like this: 4/14/19, 12:00 PM GMT+2 (=$date) becomes ... 14-04-2019 10:00 when using this code: $bp_date_to_format = date_create_from_format('Y-m-d\TH:i:sP', $date); echo date_format($bp_date_to_format, 'd-m-Y H:i'); I figured it would just rewrite the format, keeping the exact time. It isn't. We do have all these sorts of localization functions as well, but because there doesn't seem to be one single standard (each 3rd party API connection we have uses its own default datetime format so it seems). // Remove UTC Text $UTC_offset = str_replace('UTC', '', $timezone); // Get Offset in Minutes if (stripos($UTC_offset, ':') !== false) { // Calculate seconds from offset list($hours, $minutes) = explode(':', $offset); $seconds = $hours * 60 * 60 + $minutes * 60; } else { $seconds = $UTC_offset * 60 * 60; } // Get User timezone name from seconds $timezone = timezone_name_from_abbr('', $seconds, 1); if ($timezone === false) { $timezone = timezone_name_from_abbr('', $seconds, 0); } // Set new TZ return date_default_timezone_set($timezone);
Isn't there any "one way"solution that can be used? It's confusing to say the least.
Cheers. How to make a form using HTML/PHP with conditional responses based on zip code? What I want to do exactly... zip codes 91900-92600 go to URL www.example.com after submit. All others go to URL www.example.com/page after submit. Any help would be much appreciated. Hi Guys. Really Stuck here. I am making a website, its basicall an online shop of sorts. I run a website using xmb forums software as a base login script to connect to my database and created my own crude and simple pages for adding and displaying the data learning as I went. Over the years with recent upgrades of php versions its now virtually useless and unsecure code. I archive a lot of news articles but have had trouble pasting text that includes apostrophe's and special characters, but managed to fix that using addslashes() now. Can someone suggest a tutorial or a way to rebuild my site from scratch or something I can use as a template to connect to my pages ?. need a code in php - show all posts from a irc channel on website if anyone knows how to do it, please let me know... i only need to display all the talking on mirc on my website. thank you Hi, I'm trying to retrieve the integer value between the <span> tag from a HTML source code.
HTML source code:
<span> (3861822) </span>This is the php code: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <body> <?php //use curl to get html content function getHTML($url,$timeout) { $ch = curl_init($url); // initialize curl with given url curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, $_SERVER["HTTP_USER_AGENT"]); // set useragent curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); // write the response to a variable curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, true); // follow redirects if any curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, $timeout); // max. seconds to execute curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_FAILONERROR, 1); // stop when it encounters an error return @curl_exec($ch); } $html=getHTML("http://www.alibaba.com/Products",10); preg_match("/<span>(.*)<\/span>/i", $html, $match); $title = $match[1]; echo $title; ?> </body> </html>Whenever I try to run it, this error will come out: Notice: Undefined offset: 1 in C:\xampp\htdocs\myPHP\index.php on line 19. How to correct it so that it will display all the integer value within the tag name but without the bracket? Thanks Edited by Raex, 20 August 2014 - 01:38 AM. Hello !
How I can make a script of my PHP code to work even if my website is not running
Can I make this with php ?
Please Help me on how to create a website using with code n a little bit explanation using PHP n phpmyadmin. The mainthing that i need to do is using php create a simple site that logs on by connecting it to the phpmyadmin database such that i need to store the user details like name,mobile number,age,loaction,lattitude n longitude in database.Also i need to retrieve the database whenever required!!! Can Any1 please help how to do this...It means a lot to me n i'm a new User n Beginner to learn these things!!! Thank u for reading this Hello, I am building an online game(users make a character and move on a map and so on...)
All user data is stored in a mySQL database and I want the users to interact in real-time, but there can be a 1-3 second delay between the communication, but not exceed 3 seconds even if 500 players are playing at the same time.
But for the purpose of the question let's say the users can only chat between one another, if I'll have a solution for that then I can use the same method for more parts of the game.
I can't use websockets because my webhost doesn't support it( I don't want to use pusher.com).
I know I can make real-time apps with ajax long polling, but I think that with 500 players playing at the same time it's not the best solution.
So, finally:
How can I make user interaction as close as possible to a real-time game?
(Without too much load on the hosting server)
(I am sorry if some of my terms are not correct - I am just getting back to coding after a long time...)
Edited by Mythion, 17 August 2014 - 02:34 AM. I have a mysql table which will store users email addresses (each is unique and is the primary field) and a timestamp. I have added another column called `'unique_code' (varchar(64), utf8_unicode_ci)`. What I would very much appreciate assistance with is; a) Generating a 5 digit alphanumeric code, ie: 5ABH6 b) Check all rows the 'unique_code' column to ensure it is unique, otherwise re-generate and check again c) Insert the uniquely generated 5 digit alphanumeric code into `'unique_code'` column, corresponding to the email address just entered. d) display the code on screen. What code must I put and where? **My current php is as follows:** Code: [Select] require "includes/connect.php"; $msg = ''; if($_POST['email']){ // Requested with AJAX: $ajax = ($_SERVER['HTTP_X_REQUESTED_WITH'] == 'XMLHttpRequest'); try{ if(!filter_input(INPUT_POST,'email',FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL)){ throw new Exception('Invalid Email!'); } $mysqli->query("INSERT INTO coming_soon_emails SET email='".$mysqli->real_escape_string($_POST['email'])."'"); if($mysqli->affected_rows != 1){ throw new Exception('You are already on the notification list.'); } if($ajax){ die('{"status":1}'); } $msg = "Thank you!"; } catch (Exception $e){ if($ajax){ die(json_encode(array('error'=>$e->getMessage()))); } $msg = $e->getMessage(); } } |
