PHP - Fsockopen Equivalent To This Code?

Hey guys! I am writing a class file that does this:
sends a GET/POST request with headers to a page and returns the HTML stores cookies Uses GZIp decompression
I was wondering: what is the difference between fsockopen and curl? Which is faster for completing those tasks?

I am using this code to check if a server is running. Everything is fine when it is running, but when it's not, it takes ages for the fsockopen to fail. Is there a way to make it timeout faster?

Okay, I'm using fsockopen to see if a port is being used, But all it does it crashes the page if it isn't. If it is one it works but if it is off the pages just doesn't load at all.

Okay guys, so i have a status checker connected to a mySql database.
Now, what i want to do is have it check the status, then update the field in the table.

Hi, After a few years of having Barclays EPDQ payment gateway, they have now changed how they require the data to be sent to them - This has caused my site to stop working.   Now when the page redirects to epdq it is saying that the "Encrypted data is not present"   The original code for the fsockopen function was:

I found a pretty cool function that allows me to ping Pingomatic for new blogs that I have. Great. Now I can automate the process instead of manually going to their website. My problem is actually simple. Sometime Pingomatic is quite busy and is unable to receive the request. I want to be able to check the status of my ping request but I don't know how to get this specific field/variable? from the result.

This script works and when Pingomatic 'is available' returns something to the effect of Thanks for pinging, you're blog is being forwarded...etc. etc.

What I'm trying to get in a variable is the '<member><name>message' result. In this case it's "Pingomatic is a bit overloaded at the moment". This way I can try to ping the server again later at another time knowing that the ping was not successful.

What I've tried:

I've attempted to see if the 'message' (Pingomatic is a bit overloaded at the moment) is in some of the variables within the original function:

one of my methods uses fsocketopen to open a file and start processing it. I then have this method which reads out the data to the page. as the file is being processed.

 I’m translating some mixed PHP/MySQL code into pure MySQL code.
  Now I'm having a problem about how to translate PHP's time() function.

  I’m not sure how to choose between NOW(), CURDATE(), CURTIME(), and several others.
 
  I tried NOW(), but to my surprise it outputs today’s year (i.e. 2014) instead of the Unix integer timestamp I'm looking for. And this behaviour seems contray to the MySQL manual.

Good day!   I'm just a newbie in php and seeking for some assistance with my project as a beginner, as for now i do know how to insert data's in my database, but i'm having problem with this one;   Problem:  My page requirements is that it must have a button to initiate start time ex. 0:00:00 <-- starting time. Next one is, this page needs to change the amount the client need to pay for ex. For every 1 hr, they should be an amount of 60.00 and for another extended time for ex. 1:01 (1 hour and 1minute) the amount tendered must be 60+55 so total of 115.00. and if the timer hits 1:31 the amount should be in total of 120.00. and so on and so forth. there's a button that will initiate stop time and will automatically save all the data to the database.. I'm researching this for a week now, and trying some functions and codes but nothing worked.. I guess I need to study more harder with php since it's my first time to study this one.   Any help will be appreciated.. thanks and god bless!
